Overview
Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Manager, Engineering F - Nuclear Criticality Safety to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).
The Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and managing a group of professional technical resources comprised of engineers, subcontractors, technicians, and/or other professionals. Manages resources to provide successful engineering deliverables in support of SRMC facilities, engineering programs, technologies, and customer support. Provides technical, strategic, and organizational leadership for the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program supporting SRMC's Liquid Waste mission. The position is responsible for ensuring that criticality safety enables safe mission execution while supporting operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, continuous improvement, and long-term program sustainability.
Responsibilities
Defines objectives, develops strategies, and manages resources to achieve goals based upon effective interaction with management/customers
Establishes and effectively communicates expectations to subordinates to ensure high engineering discipline standards and quality are maintained
Manages engineering commitments assigned to the group via schedules (e.g., POW, POD) and tracking systems (e.g., STAR, APS), utilizing the resources assigned, for on time delivery of the desired engineering product(s)
Teams seamlessly with peer engineering managers to support the larger business objectives or major engineering issue resolutions facing the organization or department
Provides leadership and direction to achieve long term improvements for the scope and function of the department
Provides guidance, direction and support to direct reports to resolve questions, issues, and other matters ranging from technical to personnel in nature
Active member of the SRMC expanded staff, available for developmental roles and support of senior management objectives
Program Leadership
Lead and continuously improve the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program.
Establish strategic direction and engineering priorities.
Ensure compliance with DOE requirements, ANSI/ANS standards, and site implementing documents.
Oversee staffing, metrics, assessments, and program performance.
Overall health and effectiveness of the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program
Engineering Excellence
Direct preparation, review, and approval of Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations and supporting analyses.
Ensure appropriate engineering rigor and conservative technical judgment.
Oversee implementation of approved computational methods and engineering practices.
Ensure technical quality of NCSEs, NCSAs, NCSASRs, hazard analyses, and related engineering products.
People Leadership
Maintain the Criticality Safety Training and Qualification Program.
Foster ownership, accountability, technical rigor, and respectful challenge.
Develop collaborative relationships across organizations.
Preserve institutional knowledge while improving program capability.
Continuous Improvement
Advance modernization initiatives, process improvements, and knowledge management.
Promote innovation that improves engineering effectiveness without compromising safety.
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
BS in Engineering or closely related Science (e.g., Physics, Chemistry) and progressive professional engineering experience.
Additional Information:
This position may fall under DOE Order 426.2 and as such must meet the conditions of the order.On an exception basis, equivalencies for education and experience may be applied.
Post-secondary education may reduce the years of experience required for entry.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership of technical organizations or engineering programs.
Significant Nuclear Criticality Safety experience supporting DOE or comparable nuclear facilities.
Current Senior Criticality Safety Engineer (SCSE) qualification, or qualifications and experience supporting attainment of a SCSE qualification within approximately one year of hire.
Experience with DOE Order 420.1C, 10 CFR 830, ANSI/ANS 8-series standards, and program implementation.
Experience with Safety Basis integration, hazard analysis, MCNP and/or SCALE.
