Apium Swarm Robotics (ASR) is revolutionizing swarm autonomy software for air, surface, undersea, and ground vehicles operating across dual-use commercial and defense environments. Our systems are deployed on real platforms, tested in the field, and delivered to customers operating in complex, uncertain, and safety-critical conditions.
We do not build research proto@types or slideware. Our software is integrated into real vehicles, tested in the field, and delivered to customers who depend on operational reliability, speed of execution, and mission relevance. We prioritize performance over hype.
ASR systems represent the next phase in autonomy: collaborative swarming. These are not like pre-programmed drones for light shows. We are creating real-time cooperative management that lets one operator control dozens to hundreds of vehicles in real-time with the ease of controlling a single vehicle. As such, this role requires comfort with responsibility, ambiguity, and operational accountability.
ASR seeks a Facilities & Site Operations Manager to own the day-to-day operating environment of our San Diego facility. This is a hands-on, multi-functional role responsible for keeping ASR running physically - the space, the security, the supplies, the shipments, and the safety program that supports a growing engineering and manufacturing team.
The role sits at the intersection of several functions. You will partner with the Manufacturing Manager on indirect materials planning and inventory, work through Red Cat's corporate Shipping Lead on outbound logistics, integrate with Red Cat's corporate safety cadence for EHS, and report to ASR's VP of Operations for site-level accountability. Comfort operating in this multi-directional coordination environment - and turning ambiguous requests into clean, repeatable processes - is essential.
Physical security and after-hours coverage are core responsibilities. You will administer contractor and visitor access, maintain the access log, coordinate executive and customer visits, and serve as ASR's primary on-call point of contact for critical after-hours alarms. You will also drive continuous improvement of the workplace environment itself, including signage, wayfinding, and common-area presentation that reinforces ASR's brand for employees and visitors.
This is a role for a self-starter who takes ownership of the operating environment and treats the facility as their own. Formal facilities credentials help but are not required - we are more interested in candidates who bring the right instincts (organization, hospitality, safety awareness, calm under pressure) and are willing to build the systems ASR needs as we scale. This role is a strong fit for candidates with a military logistics, base operations, or physical security background.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Own day-to-day operations of ASR's San Diego facility, including maintenance, cleanliness, and vendor management for janitorial, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and grounds services
Manage physical security operations including access control systems and alarm response; serve as primary on-call point of contact for critical after-hours facility alarms
Administer contractor and visitor access management, including check-in and check-out procedures, credentialing verification, escort assignment where required, and access log maintenance
Coordinate executive and customer visit logistics; drive continuous improvement of the workplace environment through signage, wayfinding, and common-area presentation
Support the Manufacturing Manager on indirect materials planning and forecasting, ensuring critical manufacturing inputs are on hand or on order against production plans
Own the workplace supply program, including office consumables, pantry stock, PPE, and general facility supplies; maintain vendor relationships for indirect procurement
Coordinate all inbound and outbound shipping operations for the San Diego site, working through Red Cat's corporate Shipping Lead and the Apium Manufacturing Manager
Own intra-Red Cat R&D shipment coordination and tracking, ensuring visibility of material movement between Red Cat subsidiaries in support of engineering and product development activities
Ensure customer-bound shipments meet ASR's quality, packaging, documentation, and traceability standards; coordinate with Contracts and Compliance on ITAR/EAR export documentation as ASR's export activity grows
Integrate ASR's site-level EHS program with Red Cat's corporate safety battle rhythm, providing site-level status and metrics
Ensure the San Diego facility maintains full compliance with Cal/OSHA, federal OSHA, and California EPA regulations applicable to a manufacturing and office environment
Own site-level EHS documentation including Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Hazard Communication Plan, and Emergency Action Plans; conduct safety walk-throughs, incident investigations, and near-miss reporting; escalate systemic issues directly to the VP of Operations
Coordinate required safety training and manage relationships with EHS-related vendors including waste-hauling, fire suppression, first aid, and safety-equipment suppliers
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in facilities management, site operations, military logistics or base operations, physical security, or a comparable operational field
Demonstrated ability to manage vendors and service contracts for facility functions such as janitorial, HVAC, security, and grounds maintenance
Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA regulations applicable to manufacturing and office environments
Experience coordinating physical security operations, including access control systems and visitor or contractor management
Familiarity with inbound and outbound shipping and receiving operations, including carrier management and shipment documentation
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple parallel workstreams across facilities, safety, shipping, and inventory functions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with executives, customers, corporate stakeholders, and external vendors
Willingness to serve as primary on-call point of contact for critical after-hours facility alarms
Comfort operating with limited pre-existing process definition and building repeatable systems as ASR scales
Comfort working independently with limited oversight
Ability to remain calm and effective under operational pressure
Additional Desired Qualifications
Prior US military service, particularly in roles involving logistics, facilities management, base operations, or military police / physical security
Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or Facility Management Professional (FMP) certification
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification
Cal/OSHA training or certification
Experience with EHS management systems and safety program administration in a manufacturing environment
Experience coordinating VIP or executive-level visits, including protocol handling and hospitality logistics
Familiarity with ITAR/EAR export-control documentation and workflows
Prior experience at a defense technology company or ITAR/EAR-regulated environment
Experience with facility CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) platforms
Familiarity with badging and access-control systems such as Genetec, Lenel, Brivo, or comparable
Forklift operator certification or equivalent industrial equipment training
Basic understanding of manufacturing consumables planning and MRO inventory practices
U.S. security clearance or ability to obtain one
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, or emergency response situations.
Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
Occasional off-hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
Requires frequent use of a computer and other standard office equipment for documentation, communication, and coordination tasks.
Requirement to travel up to 25% of the time, based on customer integration needs and operational requirements.
