Summary This position is located in the Salisbury VA Health Care System (SVAHCS), Kernersville Health Care Center (HCC) in Kernersville, NC and performs a wide variety of duties involving specimen collection, processing, and preparation of specimens for transport, while assuring accuracy of identification and integrity of specimens for routine and specialized testing throughout all processes. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Major duties and responsibilities include: Performs Phlebotomy using appropriate and established venipuncture techniques and universal precautions, being careful to avoid areas close to nerve bundles and arteries. Collects samples with knowledge of the many special anticoagulants and testing requirements for routine and complex testing both pre- and post-collection, being careful to choose the correct sample and tube @types. Properly selects containers for 24-hour urine collections according to the testing requirements and appropriate preservatives necessary. Assesses patient at all times during and after collection for any adverse responses. May be trained to administer new employee or random employee drug screen specimen collection for testing. Reports all accidents, near accidents, injuries, work related illness and other emergencies to appropriate supervisory personnel and completes documentation as required. Assesses integrity of the specimen and determines appropriate action to address any inadequate specimens. Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures including volumetric measurements, preparation of solutions (i.e. glucose and lactose tolerance test solutions), and preparation of samples for analysis by centrifugation. Assists with monitoring of inventory and maintenance of adequate phlebotomy supplies and thorough cleaning/disinfecting of work areas. Maintains and controls laboratory records with accurate documentation of orders, times collected, and initials of collector. Files all collection records promptly and assures confidentiality with locking of storage drawers/cabinets. Performs other duties as assigned. Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Physical Requirements: The work requires prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending and lifting up to 40 pounds and carrying of items, to lean over patients and equipment and to work while wearing PPE. In other situations, in the laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity, such as exceptional hand/eye coordination or color differentiation. Finger dexterity and hand eye coordination required to find hard to locate veins and to handle needles and tubes while maintaining adequate blood flow for collection. In some areas, performing morning rounds, employees may be required to travel between buildings in the dark or walking in weather to buildings which are not accessible through tunnels.
