The construction materials technician plays a key role in an engineering consulting environment by performing field operations and ensuring that construction materials used on site meet required quality standards. This position focuses on testing and inspecting concrete, asphalt, soil, and other construction materials to support safe, durable, and compliant structures.
Responsibilities
Perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials, including concrete, asphalt, and soil, in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.
Conduct compaction tests to verify that soil and other base materials meet specified density and moisture requirements.
Pull and prepare concrete cylinders for strength testing, ensuring proper sampling, labeling, curing, and documentation.
Perform concrete slump tests to evaluate workability and consistency of fresh concrete on site.
Break and test concrete cylinders to determine compressive strength, recording and reporting results accurately.
Inspect concrete placement and related activities to confirm compliance with project specifications and quality requirements.
Operate and maintain testing equipment, including nuclear gauges and other field instruments, in a safe and compliant manner.
Document test results, observations, and field conditions clearly and accurately, and communicate findings to project teams.
Support quality assurance and quality control programs by identifying nonconforming materials and assisting with corrective actions.
Follow established safety procedures and regulatory guidelines while working on active construction sites and in testing environments.
Essential Skills
Hands-on experience with concrete testing, including sampling, slump testing, and compressive strength testing using cylinders.
Knowledge of construction materials testing practices for concrete, asphalt, and soil.
Experience performing compaction tests and interpreting results for field density and moisture content.
Familiarity with concrete inspection procedures and field quality control activities.
Ability to operate and properly use a nuclear gauge for soil and materials testing.
Understanding of quality assurance and quality control principles in construction materials testing.
Attention to detail and accuracy when recording test data and preparing reports.
Ability to work effectively on active construction sites and follow safety protocols.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tests, samples, and documentation in a timely manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in an engineering consulting or construction materials testing environment.
Exposure to American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards and best practices for concrete testing and inspection.
Familiarity with NICET-related practices in construction materials testing or inspection.
Background in asphalt testing and inspection in addition to concrete and soil testing.
Interest in pursuing relevant certifications in construction materials testing and inspection.
Work Environment
This role primarily involves working outdoors on active construction sites, where the technician conducts field testing and inspection of materials under varying weather and site conditions. The position requires regular use of testing equipment such as nuclear gauges, concrete testing tools, and other field instruments. The work environment is hands-on and field-focused, with frequent travel between project locations and testing areas, and may involve standing, walking, and lifting equipment throughout the day.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
