Summary The Senior Social Worker works in the medical specialty clinic areas, including but not limited to, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics. Responsibilities Duties Include, but are not limited to: The incumbent has advanced knowledge of, and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness. Incumbent performs specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness. Incumbent incorporates complex multiple causations in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. The incumbent possesses highly advanced skills and expertise across multiple specialized intervention techniques and treatment modalities used in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery treatment programs. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with the coordination of pre- and postsurgical care needs, including arranging transportation, in-home support, securing lodging, and ensuring continuity of post-discharge support services. Develops and implements methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services. Offers consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Gastrointestinal, Urology, Infectious Disease, and Orthopedic Surgery clinics rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills. As a qualified supervisor, supervises Social Work graduate students and provides training experience for them in Social Work. Works with students to develop training plans and goals. Regularly assesses student's progress toward training goals and student's overall performance. Provides reports to the school of social work field liaison on the student's progress. The incumbent evaluates his/her practice on an on-going basis through participation in professional peer review, case conferences, research studies, or other organized means. The incumbent makes rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans for admission to mental health inpatient programs. In the event of an alleged abuse case, medical or psychiatric emergency, the medical center policy will be followed. The incumbent is responsible for intensive case management for patients in the medical specialty clinics meeting criteria set forth for such services. The incumbent will maintain reports per protocol. The incumbent will conduct psychosocial assessments and develop clinically driven treatment plans will be developed with the Veteran's input to assist him/her in meeting their needs. The incumbent documents independently in the medical records utilizing paper and/or electronic formats, including psychosocial assessments, diagnostics, treatment, progress notes, follow up, and referral. The incumbent will participate in emergency response planning and training and may be involved in the response to all @types of threat events including but not limited to natural disasters and internal or external threats of violence. Grade Determinations:In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates.GS-12-(SF-50 Documentation Submitted) - Senior Social Worker candidates must have the following: Experience/Education: Must have at least two (2) years of experience POST advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one (1) year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. AND Licensure/Certification: Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Preferred Experience: Performing comprehensive assessments, developing treatment plans, coordinating care, providing crisis intervention, and engaging in advocacy. Candidates should be able to work independently while offering psychosocial support to individuals with complex health and/or mental health need, as well as delivering short-term, solution-focused counseling to clients and their families. Experience in identifying, obtaining, and coordinating resources and facilitating appropriate referrals is also preferred.
