Job Description
This role supports modification, testing, and troubleshooting of avionics and electrical systems on C-17 and other heavy aircraft platforms. You will apply advanced technical knowledge to perform complex diagnostics, assembly, installation, and operational testing of aircraft systems and wire bundles, working both on the bench and on the flight line in accordance with Department of Defense and industry directives.
Responsibilities
Apply advanced technical knowledge to solve avionics and electronics problems that cannot be resolved solely by referencing manufacturers' manuals or standard documents.
Analyze circuits and signal flows, calculate waveforms, and determine interrelationships of circuits while exercising independent judgment.
Use complex test instruments such as high frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and computer-controlled test equipment to diagnose and resolve issues.
Perform aircraft bench and flight line operational testing and troubleshooting in accordance with Department of Defense, manufacturer, company, supplier, and other technical directives.
Assemble, install, check out, and modify wire bundles and associated components for the testing, development, and modification of aircraft in compliance with applicable directives.
Ensure proper performance of all assigned tasks and handle products, tools, and equipment with care and in accordance with established procedures.
Consult with leadership and peers to assess and select the most effective work processes for assigned projects.
Assist and train less experienced employees, sharing technical knowledge and best practices to support team development.
Lead teams through more complex aircraft-related tasks when required, ensuring work meets quality and schedule expectations.
Prioritize workload effectively to maintain schedules on assigned projects and support mission requirements.
Perform all duties of lower-level avionics classifications as needed to successfully complete assignments.
Interpret and work from standard work instructions, charts, tables, blueprints, wire diagrams, formulas, sketches, verbal instructions, and electronic orders to accomplish assigned work.
Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with established safety and operating procedures and report any unsafe conditions.
Diagnose and correct malfunctions occurring in assembly processes, including structural and electrical components as required.
Use precision measuring instruments, gauges, and tools to verify dimensions and ensure conformance to quality requirements.
Maintain all certifications, licenses, and permits required for assigned work and keep them current.
Ascend and descend vertical work ladders, work in confined spaces, and safely lift loads of approximately 35 pounds as part of daily duties.
Work various shifts and alternate baseline schedules that may change frequently to support mission requirements, including weekends and holidays, and perform both scheduled and unscheduled overtime as needed.
Apply knowledge of Hazardous Energy and Lockout/Tagout systems to ensure the work environment is safe before accessing equipment and performing tasks.
Assist other team members, including general mechanics, structures technicians, and electrical specialists, to ensure cost and schedule targets are met.
Operate equipment such as forklifts, mobile cranes, and riding-@type electric powered elevating equipment to accomplish work assignments when qualified.
Complete required on-the-job training or formal classroom training and apply learned skills consistently in daily work.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance to support production schedules and mission requirements.
Essential Skills
Experience working with the C-17 or other heavy aircraft platforms.
Hands-on experience with aircraft avionics systems such as communications, navigation, data links, weapons systems, and radar.
At least 3 years of experience in applied mathematics, statistics, or a related technical field as it applies to avionics diagnostics and analysis.
A minimum of 4 years of experience working with schematics, specifications, assembly drawings, and standard operating procedures.
At least 3 years of experience with aircraft computer systems and basic office software.
Ability to interpret blueprints, wire diagrams, charts, tables, and technical documentation to perform installations and modifications.
Proficiency with precision measuring instruments, gauges, and tools used to verify dimensions and ensure quality.
Capability to perform aircraft maintenance, overhaul, repair, and modification tasks on avionics and related systems.
Ability to work safely with Hazardous Energy and Lockout/Tagout systems.
Physical ability to ascend and descend vertical ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift approximately 35 pounds.
Willingness and ability to work variable shifts, including 1st and 2nd shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
Commitment to maintaining required certifications, licenses, and permits for the role.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with C-17 modification programs or similar heavy aircraft modification work.
Experience working with COMSEC, radar, or other complex electronic systems.
Experience in aircraft structural assembly, including sheet metal work, riveting, and structural installations.

Familiarity with airframe structures and aircraft sheet metal fabrication and installation.
Ability to operate a forklift, mobile crane, and riding-@type electric powered elevating equipment when trained and authorized.
Exposure to A&P-related tasks or certifications in aircraft maintenance (if applicable).
Successful completion of on-the-job training or formal classroom training related to avionics, electronics, or aircraft maintenance.
Comfort working with complex computer-controlled test equipment and diagnostic tools.
Strong teamwork, communication, and mentoring skills to support and train less experienced technicians.

You may also operate material handling equipment including forklifts, mobile cranes, and riding-@type electric powered elevating equipment when trained and authorized. The schedule includes variable shifts, typically 1st and 2nd shifts, and may change based on mission requirements; weekends, holidays, and both scheduled and unscheduled overtime may be required. Work often takes place at heights, on vertical ladders, and in confined spaces, and involves handling components up to approximately 35 pounds. Safety procedures, including strict adherence to Hazardous Energy and Lockout/Tagout protocols, are integral to daily operations. Dress and personal protective equipment follow standard industrial and aviation maintenance practices appropriate for a hangar and flight line environment.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $37.96 - $37.96/hr.
