About this Job
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational, and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state, and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
Preferred qualifications or supplemental information to include in the posting:
The Communications Officer 1-3 position will serve as a liaison for vital support between the Orleans Levee District Police and East Jefferson Levee District Police departments, within the jurisdiction of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E), the public, and other agencies. This position will perform mission critical duties such as: simultaneously operate a multi-channel radio console, multi-line phone system and computer system, respond to all incoming emergency and non-emergency requests and phone calls, exercise judgment to determine the nature and priority of the call and accurately dispatch to the appropriate responding agency and/or police officers, answers after-hours law enforcement lines, enters data into Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), enters time critical entries into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, compiles law enforcement statistics, and trains law enforcement personnel on the Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD).
Minimum Qualifications
Six months of experience in transmitting and receiving messages by radio or in administrative services; OR
Six months of training in a business or clerical-related curriculum in a business school or technical institute; OR
Fifteen semester hours of college training.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All persons appointed to this job will be required by the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Louisiana State Police Terminal Operator Certification Program Guidelines to meet the terminal operator certification/re-certification requirement within six months of employment.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Answers, evaluates, and prioritizes incoming phone calls
Effectively communicate information to law enforcement, medical and fire personnel, local government officials, and the general public
Monitors several radio frequencies; responds to Police Officer requests as soon as possible, ensuring that Police Officer safety is a priority; maintains awareness of the location of on-duty officers in the field at any given time
Elicit information, quickly and accurately analyze and evaluate situations, and choose an effective course of action for both emergency and non-emergency situations
Deal effectively with a diverse range of individuals who may be emotionally upset and/or uncooperative
Maintain confidentiality of all internal and external communications as appropriate
Compile law enforcement statistics
Serves as the CAD System Training Specialist
Serve as the Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC) for the operators of the Louisiana Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (LLETS) of his/her agency

NOTE: The Orleans Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of Orleans Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water, and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority .
