This is a limited availability position with a preference for LSA graduate students.

Why do you want to grade for a course associated with the Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars?

What interests you about working as a GSI for a living learning community course, focused on research?

What academic experience do you have with research?

Describe your mentoring, grading, or instructional experience.

Applicants must clearly indicate which school is their home school (LSA, Engineering, etc.)

Responsibilities*

The graduate student instructor will work with the faculty instructor to scaffold and implement curricula, communicate with students regularly, engage students in discussion of material during class times, office hours and other irregularly scheduled meetings. The graduate student instructor will be responsible for grading all assignments and posting grades weekly to the Canvas gradebook. The course meets Tuesdays from 4:00PM - 5:00PM each week; the GSI should be available to attend those meetings, and hold office hours weekly. The GSI should also be able to respond to student emails within 1 business day.

Required Qualifications*

To be considered, candidates must be enrolled and in good standing in an LSA graduate program. Suitable candidates will have research experience. They will also be able to work with students from all disciplinary backgrounds, provide written feedback to ~115 students, and support students throughout the semester.

Desired Qualifications*

The ideal candidate will have experience as an instructor or grader of a similar course. They will have practical experience in STEM as a student, and/or they will have practical knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Course Description

ALA 104 (Introduction to Research) is a community membership course where students learn about research, discuss research ethics using articles and case studies, complete workshops on common research tools (including library resources, Excel, and PowerPoint), and practice communicating their own research to a general audience.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Decision Making Process

The faculty instructor will review all applications and interview suitable candidates prior to making a final decision. MRADS will make reasonable efforts to extend offers to successful applicants within a month of the posting being closed. Offers will typically be extended at least twenty-one (21) calendar days prior to the start of employment.

Selection Process

Candidates will be evaluated using the qualification criteria above. Applicants should also possess a strong desire to work with first-year undergraduates and have interest in research.
