Summary This position is located at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA. Engineering Service. The Motor Vehicle Operator is in the Transportation Section. The duties include of specially equipped vehicles use in the transportation of patients, staff and materials between divisions and other cities for the Medical Center. Responsibilities Work assignments are received from the Supervisor, Mechanics/Transportation Section, and the incumbent is responsible for accomplishing these assignments with a minimum of supervision. The incumbent works independently. Drives up to 20 passenger wheelchair buses. These vehicles are specially equipped with hydraulic/electrical systems operated by the driver, to raise and lower a wheelchair platform. Wheelchair patients enter and exit this bus with the driver's assistance utilizing the lift. Drives trucks up to 2 and 1/2 ton capacity hauling various materials on and off the Medical Center campus. Must have skill and knowledge to operate these vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways. Drivers have skill and knowledge to operate these vehicles over a variety of roads including interstate highways, narrow country roads, and on steep winding grades Is responsible for compiling all data pretaining to vehicle operation. Data include mileage, fuel used, maintenance costs and repair cost. Dispatches drivers and vehicles as required, documents patient transportation requests, verifies driver records are completed when turning in vehicles, and properly secures keys and credit cards. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a current and valid State issued Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger (P) endorsement(s) to operate a motor vehicle. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Selectee is required to posses the physical and mental qualifications required to secure the applicable state operator's permit, the ability to sit and drive for long periods of time, the coordination required to manipulate gears, steering, brakes, clutch, accelerator, and the hoist unit; the ability to perform frequent lifting and loading of objects weighing over 50 pounds, the muscular strength to steer and shift gears on heavily loaded trucks.
