Responsibilities As a Supervisory Industrial Hygienist, you will perform the following duties: Serves as first-line supervisor within the Industrial Hygiene unit overseeing a team of industrial hygienists, industrial hygiene technician and/or safety specialists. Works collaboratively with Industrial Hygiene Unit Chief, public health advisor and safety and occupational health managers/specialists and a team within an enterprise-wide safety program including elements such as Collateral Duty Safety Officers (CDSO), providing Employee Occupational Safety and Health guidance, management of a Safety Management Information System (SMIS) database, and following Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record keeping regulations. Serves as subject matter expert (SME) in the field of industrial hygiene within the agency management with responsibilities for oversight of contract service providers. You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess one of the following: Experience: One (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as: Expert in industrial hygiene for the agency, with responsibility for conducting comprehensive industrial hygiene surveys and special studies, as well as for providing expert advice to collaborative partners. Planning, conducting and directing special studies concerned with occupational health problems which require the development or modification of air sampling equipment or protective devices, or the evaluation of control measures for a specific operation. Often serves as team leader during special studies. Assisting other occupational safety specialists and industrial hygienists in developing study plans for offices to be visited based on knowledge of prior surveys, industrial operations, and their associated health hazards. Drafting technical reports, bulletins, instructions, regulations, and sections of field manuals for guidance of agency personnel, requiring research into various technical publications and coordination with related occupational health professionals, Participating in developing courses of instruction for agency personnel, preparing course agenda, and giving technical instruction on industrial hygiene subjects. Education Basic Requirements The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH)). Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. Additional Information This position is at the full performance level.
