Construction Materials Technician - Oxford, MS
Job Description
The Construction Materials Technician performs field and laboratory testing, construction observation, and inspection of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. The role involves accurately documenting and communicating test results, supporting geotechnical investigations, and ensuring equipment, vehicles, and work areas remain clean, organized, and in good working condition.
Responsibilities
Perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel, in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.
Conduct construction observation and inspection activities to verify that materials and workmanship meet project specifications and quality requirements.
Communicate test results clearly and concisely to project managers, engineers, contractors, and other appropriate individuals.
Tabulate and calculate laboratory and field test results, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all data.
Prepare detailed and timely field reports that document testing procedures, observations, and results.
Maintain, clean, and organize testing equipment, tools, vehicles, and work areas to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Assist with geotechnical investigations, including occasional work with drill rigs in the field.
Follow safety procedures and guidelines while working in the field, laboratory, and around heavy equipment.
Support project schedules by being available for extended hours and weekend work as needed.
Essential Skills
Hands-on experience with construction materials testing, including soils, concrete, and related materials.
Ability to perform and interpret tests on construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel.
Strong ability to tabulate, calculate, and verify laboratory and field test results with attention to detail.
Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey test results and observations clearly.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable violation history.
Ability to work safely in field and laboratory environments, including around heavy equipment and drill rigs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Ability to prepare clear, concise, and well-organized field reports.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tests, documentation, and equipment maintenance tasks.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including extended days and Saturdays, to support project needs.
Work Environment
The work environment combines field and laboratory settings and varies throughout the year. During the busier seasons, typical workweeks range from approximately 45 to 55 hours, with a general schedule starting around 7:30 a.m. and ending between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The team rotates Saturday coverage, but this role requires availability to work every Saturday if needed to support project demands. From December through March, workload typically slows, and the schedule generally shifts to Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. The position involves working outdoors on construction sites and around drill rigs during geotechnical investigations, as well as indoors in a laboratory environment where testing equipment and tools are used regularly.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
