Job Title: Construction Quality Manager (Mechanical/Civil)
Job Description
This full-time, field-based Construction Quality Manager role supports a major power generation project in Eastern Iowa. The position focuses on leading onsite quality assurance and inspection activities for mechanical and civil construction, ensuring all work complies with applicable codes, standards, design specifications, and contract requirements. The Construction Quality Manager partners closely with contractors, project leadership, and stakeholders to drive quality performance, resolve discrepancies, and continuously improve the project's quality management program.
Responsibilities
Oversee the implementation and execution of the project site quality management program for mechanical and civil construction activities.
Perform daily field inspections to verify that construction work aligns with design specifications, regulatory requirements, and contract documents.
Collaborate with contractors to identify, investigate, and resolve quality discrepancies and ambiguities in a timely manner.
Control, maintain, and distribute all quality documentation and records to ensure accuracy, traceability, and compliance.
Conduct internal and external quality audits on behalf of project leadership to verify adherence to the quality management system.
Review contractor submittals to confirm that quality requirements are clearly defined, understood, and followed.
Evaluate inspection personnel qualifications and training records to ensure compliance with project and regulatory standards.
Monitor, manage, and drive closure of nonconformance reports (NCRs), including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Analyze and track quality performance metrics and statistical reports to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Recommend and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of the quality management system.
Review and provide input on quality-related correspondence, ensuring clear communication of expectations and requirements.
Support project turnover documentation and closeout activities, ensuring all quality records and deliverables are complete and accurate.
Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly project meetings, providing insight on quality issues, risks, and mitigation strategies.
Work closely with project management and site construction teams to align quality objectives with overall project goals.
Support site construction and project management activities by providing expert guidance on quality assurance and quality control matters.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5+ years of experience in construction quality management or construction quality assurance roles.
Strong understanding of mechanical and/or civil construction practices, including field execution and inspection requirements.
Demonstrated experience in site construction environments with a focus on quality assurance and quality control.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills to manage documentation, inspections, and reporting.
Proven ability to resolve conflicts and drive issue resolution in the field while maintaining project schedules and standards.
Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities to interpret data, identify issues, and recommend solutions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with contractors, project leadership, and stakeholders.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting, documentation, and data analysis.
Ability to work independently and make critical decisions in a fast-paced, field-based environment.
Willingness and ability to travel between project sites in Cedar Rapids and Burlington, Iowa.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting utility or power generation projects, particularly in a construction quality capacity.
Working in large-scale EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) or industrial construction environments.
Experience in project management, including coordination of site construction and quality assurance activities.
Familiarity with quality management systems, internal and external auditing, and continuous improvement methodologies.
Exposure to mechanical and civil construction on complex infrastructure projects, such as power plants or industrial facilities.
Work Environment
This role supports a natural gas-fired power generation facility in Eastern Iowa with a capacity of approximately 94 MW. The project involves the installation of five Wärtsilä W18V50SG reciprocating internal combustion engine generators, each with a nominal capacity of 18.8 MW. The facility is located adjacent to an existing generating station and represents a significant investment in regional energy infrastructure. The position is field-based at the project site and requires regular presence in active construction areas, including coordination with site construction teams and contractors. Work hours typically align with site construction schedules and may include extended or irregular hours as project needs dictate. The environment involves working around heavy equipment, mechanical and civil construction activities, and operational power generation equipment, requiring adherence to site safety protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Travel between project sites in Cedar Rapids and Burlington, Iowa, is required to support quality oversight across multiple locations. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $52.00 - $60.00/hr.
