Job Title: General Manager - Construction OperationsJob Description
This role leads day-to-day construction operations across multiple projects and field crews, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget. The General Manager - Construction Operations oversees labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to maximize productivity, while driving continuous improvement, supporting company growth initiatives, and maintaining strong relationships with customers and stakeholders. This position provides strategic and hands-on leadership to supervisors and field teams, champions a strong safety culture, and uses construction management tools and data to monitor performance and profitability.
Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day construction operations across multiple projects, crews, and supervisors to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution.
Ensure all projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in alignment with company standards and customer expectations.
Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
Monitor project performance, production, and quality, and implement corrective actions when necessary to address issues or delays.
Assist in planning and executing company growth initiatives, including operational improvements and expansion efforts.
Conduct regular jobsite visits to monitor quality, production, safety, and customer satisfaction, and provide direct support to field personnel.
Provide leadership, coaching, and support to supervisors, foremen, and crew members, fostering a collaborative and accountable work environment.
Assist field personnel with problem-solving and operational challenges, offering guidance on best practices and resource utilization.
Ensure company standards, policies, and procedures are consistently followed across all projects and teams.
Train, mentor, and develop supervisors and field employees to build a strong leadership pipeline and improve overall team capability.
Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and ongoing employee development activities.
Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and establish clear employee growth and development plans.
Promote accountability while maintaining a positive, respectful, and safety-focused company culture.
Champion the company's safety culture and lead by example in all aspects of safety behavior and decision-making.
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, as well as customer and company safety requirements on all job sites.
Conduct safety audits, investigations, and corrective action reviews to identify risks and prevent recurrence of incidents.
Support safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on risk reduction and incident prevention.
Maintain a strong focus on risk management and proactively identify and address potential hazards and operational risks.
Review production reports, job costing data, budgets, and profitability metrics to evaluate operational performance.
Utilize construction management software and digital tools to monitor project status, productivity, costs, and key performance indicators.
Prepare reports, presentations, and operational summaries for executive leadership, highlighting performance, risks, and opportunities.
Assist with forecasting labor, equipment, and project needs to support scheduling, resource planning, and growth initiatives.
Support contract administration activities and customer communications as needed to ensure clear expectations and successful project delivery.
Maintain strong relationships with customers and stakeholders, acting as a trusted operational partner.
Participate in client meetings and project reviews to discuss progress, address concerns, and identify improvement opportunities.
Address customer concerns professionally and proactively, ensuring timely resolution and high levels of customer satisfaction.
Represent the company in a positive and professional manner in all internal and external interactions.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5-10 years of construction industry experience.
Minimum 3-5 years of leadership or management experience within construction operations.
Strong understanding of construction project management and field operations, including scheduling, resourcing, and cost control.
Proven experience managing multiple crews and supervisors across concurrent projects.
Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices.
Demonstrated experience in operations management and construction management.
Experience working in right-of-way construction environments.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook for reporting, communication, and data analysis.
Experience with construction management software platforms to monitor and manage project performance.
Experience with project scheduling software to plan and track project timelines.
Experience with job costing and reporting systems to monitor budgets, costs, and profitability.
Experience with digital documentation and reporting tools for field and office workflows.
Ability to supervise and lead field teams, including supervisors and crew members.
Ability to interpret and manage profit and loss (P&L) metrics and operational financial performance.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to travel overnight 1-2 nights per week as needed.
Ability to walk active construction sites and uneven terrain safely.
Ability to climb equipment and access various jobsite environments.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to sit, stand, and drive for extended periods.

Preferred experience with Power BI or other business intelligence reporting software for dashboards and analytics.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with field teams, leadership, and customers.
Ability to prepare clear reports, presentations, and operational summaries for executive audiences.
Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Work Environment
The role operates in a blended environment with approximately 50% of the time spent in the office and 50% in the field. The position involves regional travel, including overnight travel 1-2 nights per week as needed to visit jobsites and meet with customers or stakeholders. The work environment includes active construction sites, which may involve uneven terrain, heavy equipment, and exposure to varying weather conditions. The role requires frequent walking, climbing onto equipment, and accessing different jobsite areas, as well as extended periods of sitting, standing, and driving. A company vehicle and technology package are provided to support travel, communication, and use of construction management, scheduling, job costing, and reporting software.
