This hands-on Accounting Manager role oversees day-to-day accounting operations and broader operational processes within a growing architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) environment. The position partners closely with leadership and cross-functional teams in finance, HR, payroll, and project operations while leading a small accounting team and driving process improvements. Responsibilities
Oversee full-cycle accounting operations, including general ledger management, month-end and year-end close, and preparation of accurate financial reports.
Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements and reporting packets to leadership and other stakeholders.
Manage cash flow forecasting, banking activities, and utilization of lines of credit to support operational needs.
Maintain and strengthen banking relationships while supporting financing needs and related documentation.
Lead the budgeting and forecasting processes across the organization, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational goals.
Oversee payroll processing, including multi-state payroll, tax filings, and year-end reporting such as W-2s and 1099s.
Manage project accounting workflows in an AEC environment, including project number setup, job cost tracking, and project-level financial reporting.
Oversee timesheet processes and weekly labor reporting to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Analyze billing rates, utilization, and capacity to support effective resource planning and project profitability.
Support monthly time and labor analysis to provide insights into project performance and profitability.
Review and support contract administration, including creation and review of subcontract agreements and coordination of corporate review as needed.
Coordinate project-related Certificates of Insurance (COIs) and ensure appropriate coverage is in place.
Manage business and liability insurance programs, including renewals, claims coordination, and ongoing coverage review.
Ensure compliance with industry-specific requirements, regulatory standards, and internal control policies.
Oversee deposits, banking activity, and day-to-day cash management processes.
Monitor working capital and ensure appropriate liquidity to support operations and strategic initiatives.
Support accounts receivable oversight and collection strategies as needed to maintain healthy cash flow.
Lead, mentor, and develop a small accounting team, including a Senior Accountant and an Accounting Specialist, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
Collaborate with leadership to improve financial processes, enhance reporting capabilities, and shape the accounting function as the organization grows.
Partner with HR and operations to support benefits administration, payroll-related compliance, and cross-functional initiatives.
Essential Skills
At least 8 years of accounting experience, including a minimum of 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
Experience working in the architecture, engineering, or construction (AEC) industry.
Strong understanding of project accounting and job costing in a project-based environment.
Knowledge of payroll processes and multi-state tax requirements.
Experience with benefits administration, including 401(k), ESOP, and insurance plans.
Proficiency in financial reporting, budgeting, and cash flow management.
Hands-on approach and comfort working in a multi-functional role that spans accounting, finance, HR, and operations.
Strong systems experience with ERP or accounting software and advanced proficiency in Excel.
Ability to manage full-cycle accounting, including month-end close, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills with attention to detail.
Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with leadership and cross-functional teams.
Ability to lead and develop a small accounting team in a dynamic environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with Deltek or similar project-based ERP systems.
CPA designation or equivalent experience.
Experience working in a growing or evolving organization with changing processes and structures.
Exposure to ESOP environments and related accounting and administration.
Familiarity with the AEC sector, including project-based workflows and job cost structures.
Interest in supporting organizations focused on planning, design, conservation, and environmentally conscious projects.
Ability to contribute to process improvements and help shape the accounting function as the organization evolves.
Work Environment
This is an onsite role within a collaborative, team-focused environment. The Accounting Manager leads a three-person accounting team, including a Senior Accountant and an Accounting Specialist, and works closely with approximately 25 colleagues in the local office and additional team members across multiple offices. The organization is mid-sized, with around 65 employees and three studios, and works on a wide variety of projects such as parks and recreation spaces, schools, playgrounds, urban design and planning, public facilities, infrastructure, and streetscapes. The culture emphasizes design, environmental stewardship, and balancing human use with natural systems, with a strong focus on restoring landscapes and enhancing the human experience. The work environment offers schedule flexibility with core hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays, allowing employees to design their schedules around these core blocks. Hours worked over 42 per week are banked for additional paid time off, supporting work-life balance. The role involves regular use of ERP or accounting systems and Excel, frequent collaboration with project and operations teams, and close interaction with leadership in a professional studio setting.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $62.50/hr.
