A Physician Assistant functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high quality, cost effective care to patients within the APPs scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. Position Description:
UNC Health is seeking a full-time, onsite Interventional Radiology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to support Interventional Radiology services at UNC Health Johnston locations in Smithfield and Clayton, North Carolina. This position is based exclusively at the Johnston Health sites and focuses on delivering high-quality, patient-centered interventional care in a community hospital environment.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing Interventional Radiology program and partner closely with Interventional Radiologists, nursing, procedural, and imaging teams to expand minimally invasive image-guided services aligned with the needs of the Johnston County community.
The successful candidate will function as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team in collaboration with supervising Interventional Radiologists to provide comprehensive, high-quality, cost-effective care to patients within the APP's scope of practice and approved credentialing. The APP will support both inpatient and outpatient Interventional Radiology services and contribute to program growth, patient access, and care coordination.
Interventional Radiology services are delivered onsite at UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield and Clayton, supporting both inpatient and outpatient populations. This is a fully onsite clinical role requiring presence at both locations. No services are provided at the UNC main hospital campus.
APP Responsibilities:
The Interventional Radiology APP will work collaboratively with Interventional Radiologists and the procedural care team to support inpatient and outpatient clinical and procedural workflows.
Clinical Care & Patient Management
Conduct inpatient and outpatient evaluations and consultations for Interventional Radiology patients
Review imaging, laboratory data, and patient histories to support procedural planning and appropriateness review
Provide pre-procedure education, informed consent discussions, and post-procedure follow-up care
Coordinate care with referring providers, hospital teams, and procedural staff to optimize patient access and continuity of care
Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation
Procedural Support
Assist Interventional Radiologists with image-guided procedures as appropriate
Perform select procedures within scope, training, and credentialing, which may include:
Paracentesis
Thoracentesis
Vascular access procedures
Line, tube, and drain exchanges
Lumbar punctures and other approved image-guided procedures
Support procedural triage, exam review, and coordination of care
Program Development & Education
Support growth of Interventional Radiology services across UNC Health Johnston locations
Participate in quality improvement and workflow optimization initiatives
Educate patients, families, and care teams regarding procedures and treatment plans
Schedule:
This position is a full-time, onsite clinical role based at UNC Health Johnston locations in Smithfield and Clayton.
Expected schedule:
Monday through Friday, daytime hours
Shared call responsibilities may be required based on programmatic needs and future growth of Interventional Radiology services
Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in Interventional Radiology, Radiology, Surgery, Vascular, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, or other procedural-based specialties preferred
Experience with image-guided procedures and procedural patient management preferred
Strong clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment
Exceptional new graduates with strong procedural interest and relevant clinical training may be considered

Education Requirements:
? Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
? Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
? Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.
