Job Description
The specimen accessioning team supports critical pre-analytical and post-analytical processes for diagnostic and therapeutic testing. As a Specimen Accessioner, you receive and log incoming samples, prepare them for laboratory testing, and manage their storage and disposal after analysis. Responsibilities
Receive incoming samples from couriers arriving from across the United States and internationally, and initiate the tracking process promptly.
Verify that all samples in each shipment have arrived, either manually or through the data system for larger shipments.
Inspect incoming samples and packaging for any damage, remove and dispose of packaging materials, and move samples forward for data entry.
Operate multiple computer software systems and apply the correct system based on the specific @type of sample or test requirements.
Confirm that patient names and other identifying information on samples match the corresponding requisitions to ensure accurate processing.
Handle primarily urine samples, along with some blood, serum, plasma, and other body fluids as required.
Enter sample information into laboratory information systems, generate appropriate labels, and accurately label all samples.
Aliquot samples from one container into multiple containers when needed, and perform basic processing such as centrifuging or freezing samples to stabilize them.
Work efficiently as part of a team that processes approximately 5,000 to 11,000 samples per day in a high-volume environment.
Manage the ongoing maintenance, storage, and disposal of samples in walk-in refrigerators and freezers at defined intervals of 3, 6, and 12 months.
Maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in all accessioning and sample handling tasks.
Meet established turnaround times by working effectively in a fast-paced, production-oriented setting.
Follow laboratory quality control procedures and standard operating protocols to support reliable test results for clients and patients.
Essential Skills
High School Diploma, with a preference for candidates who have completed some coursework in science.
Demonstrated desire to grow and advance within a laboratory environment.
Intermediate computer skills, including proficiency with typing and 10-key data entry.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a production setting.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy.
Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and meet established turnaround times.
Willingness to learn new processes, systems, and laboratory procedures.
Comfort working with biological specimens such as urine, blood, serum, plasma, and other body fluids.
Effective multitasking skills developed through prior experience in environments such as laboratories, banking, serving, retail, customer service, or similar roles.
Work Environment
This role is based in a medical laboratory environment focused on the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of diagnostic and therapeutic testing. As a Specimen Accessioner, you work in a fast-paced, production-@type setting that processes approximately 5,000 to 11,000 samples each day. You will receive comprehensive on-the-job training to perform a vital function in medical laboratory science and support accurate results for clients and patients. The position involves frequent use of multiple computer software systems, laboratory information systems, and standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, freezers, and walk-in refrigerators. The role includes regular handling of biological specimens, including urine and other body fluids, within a controlled and regulated environment. The available opening is on a second shift schedule from 5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The position currently offers a contract arrangement, with openness to candidates interested in a three-month contract. Once converted to full-time employment, team members are eligible to accrue up to 144 hours of vacation pay in addition to holidays. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.53 - $19.53/hr.
