This traveling construction materials technician role focuses on performing field testing and observations on large commercial and industrial construction projects across multiple regions. You will support major data center and other large-scale developments by ensuring construction materials meet required standards, documenting findings, and communicating results to project teams. This position offers extensive travel, overtime opportunities, per diem while on jobs, and long-term project stability with the chance to work on high-profile projects nationwide.
Responsibilities
Perform construction materials testing and observations on large commercial and industrial projects, including data centers and other major facilities.
Conduct field inspections of concrete and other construction materials to verify compliance with project specifications, standards, and codes.
Carry out materials testing activities such as concrete testing, soil testing, and related field measurements using appropriate tools and equipment, including nuclear gauges.
Prepare accurate and detailed daily reports documenting site observations, test results, and any notable issues or deviations.
Review collected data and testing results to identify trends, verify accuracy, and ensure completeness before submitting reports.
Communicate findings clearly and professionally to project managers on site and within the broader project team.
Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and field personnel from ownership groups, general contractors, and subcontractors to support quality control efforts.
Follow established testing procedures, safety protocols, and industry standards while working on active construction sites.
Travel to various project locations across different regions and remain on-site for the duration of assigned projects, as needed.
Participate in training on existing data center projects in locations such as North Dakota and Texas, then transition to new projects once training is complete.
Adapt to changing project needs and schedules, including working overtime when required to meet project deadlines.
Maintain and properly handle testing equipment, including nuclear gauges, in accordance with safety and regulatory requirements.
Essential Skills
ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician I certification.
ACI certifications (at least one ACI certification is required; additional ACI certifications are considered a bonus).
Minimum of 2 years of construction inspection experience.
Minimum of 2 years of materials testing experience.
Hands-on experience with concrete inspection and concrete materials testing.
Experience with soil testing in a construction materials @context.
Experience using nuclear gauges for materials or soil testing.
Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and timely daily field reports.
Strong communication skills to interact effectively with engineers, project managers, and field personnel.
Comfort working in the field full time on active construction sites.
Willingness and ability to travel extensively and stay out of town for extended periods.
Ability to work overtime as project demands require.
Comfort working outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and sun.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
ACI Concrete Strength I certification (preferred but not required).
ICC Pre-Stressed Concrete Special Inspector certification (preferred but not required).
Nuclear gauge and radiation safety training or certification (preferred but not required).
Prior experience working on large commercial or industrial projects, especially data centers.
Ability to build strong working relationships with diverse on-site teams, including owners, general contractors, and subcontractors.
Flexibility to move between different project locations as needed and adapt quickly to new job sites and teams.
Work Environment
This role is entirely field-based and involves working full time on large, active construction sites across the country. You will regularly interact with engineers, project managers, owners' representatives, general contractors, and subcontractors, often coordinating with multiple teams on the same site. Travel is a core part of the position, and you will typically remain at a project location for the length of the project. Arrangements can be made to accommodate periodic trips home, such as over long weekends, but you should be comfortable staying out of town for extended periods. The work environment is outdoors and subject to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and direct sun, and you will be expected to perform your duties safely and effectively in all these conditions. You will work around heavy equipment, construction activities, and materials testing devices such as nuclear gauges, following strict safety procedures at all times. The schedule often includes overtime, particularly as projects reach critical phases, and you will receive per diem while working on out-of-town assignments. The culture emphasizes hands-on learning, with initial training provided on existing data center projects before transitioning to new, long-term projects that offer stable, ongoing work and exposure to high-profile commercial developments.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
