Job Title: Medical Assistant - Mohs and Dermatology Clinic
Job Description
This Medical Assistant role supports a busy dermatology practice with a strong focus on Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical dermatologic procedures. You will work closely with the Mohs surgeon and providers to prepare procedure rooms, assist during surgeries, manage patient intake and education, and maintain accurate clinical and administrative documentation. The position offers the opportunity to gain experience in a specialty setting while working with multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Responsibilities
Prepare exam and procedure rooms for Mohs micrographic surgery and other surgical and medical visits, ensuring all instruments, supplies, and equipment are properly set up for efficient clinic flow.
Assist the Mohs surgeon during all stages of the procedure, including pre-operative preparation, tissue handling support, hemostasis, wound closure assistance, and post-operative care.
Perform comprehensive patient intake by obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, taking surgical photographs, and addressing pre-procedure questions and concerns.
Provide clear wound care instructions and educate patients on post-procedure expectations, including signs and symptoms that require follow-up.
Process and handle tissue specimens for pathology evaluation according to established protocols and state and clinic guidelines.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of procedures, medications, quality measures (including MIPS), and follow-up instructions in the electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Schedule pre-operative and post-operative appointments and assist patients with inquiries related to their visits and procedures.
Confirm patient insurance coverage and obtain prior authorizations when required, following practice policies and payer requirements.
Complete patient charting and documentation accurately, maintaining up-to-date and organized medical records.
Manage pathology logs and act as a liaison between the physician and patient to communicate pathology results and document all communications according to protocol.
Record required information in compliance logs, including pathology, biopsy, laboratory, and temperature logs, in alignment with regulatory and practice standards.
Maintain compliance with OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards, and complete all mandatory compliance training as required by the practice.
Cross-train in the Mohs laboratory to support histotechnology components as allowed by state-specific CLIA requirements.
Cross-train in general and cosmetic dermatology to support a variety of dermatologic services as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support clinic operations and patient care.
Essential Skills
Experience providing medical assisting support in a clinical environment, including direct patient care and clinical workflows.
Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly as it relates to dermatology and surgical procedures.
Ability to perform patient intake, including obtaining medical history, reviewing consent forms, and documenting information accurately.
Skill in assisting with surgical and procedural care, including preparing rooms, supporting the provider during procedures, and providing post-procedure instructions.
Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, including documenting visits, procedures, medications, and follow-up instructions.
Strong attention to detail in processing and handling tissue specimens for pathology according to protocol.
Understanding of and adherence to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control standards.
Effective communication skills for educating patients on wound care and post-procedure expectations and for acting as a liaison between patients and providers.
Organizational skills to manage scheduling, documentation, pathology logs, and compliance logs accurately and efficiently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
1-2 years of recent experience in a dermatology or surgical setting preferred.
Medical Assistant (MA) certification preferred.
Experience working in dermatology, including general, surgical, or cosmetic dermatology, is highly beneficial.
Familiarity with dermatology-specific workflows, including Mohs micrographic surgery, is an advantage.
Experience with EMR systems such as NextGen and EMA is preferred.
Experience in health care settings that require coordination of insurance verification and prior authorizations is helpful.
Ability and willingness to cross-train in Mohs laboratory histotechnology components as allowed by state-specific CLIA requirements.
Flexibility to support both general and cosmetic dermatology services as clinic needs evolve.
Work Environment
This role is based in a specialty dermatology practice where you will support providers in both surgical and medical dermatology, including Mohs micrographic surgery. You will work directly in clinical and procedure rooms, using electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as NextGen and EMA to document care and manage patient information. The dress code requires solid color scrubs, with flexibility in color choice. The clinic generally schedules a one-hour break around the typical lunch period, with exact timing based on clinic flow and patient volume. You will collaborate closely with providers and clinical staff in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment that emphasizes high-quality care, attention to detail, and adherence to safety, privacy, and infection control standards. The position offers the opportunity to gain experience in a specialty practice and to work with multiple EMR platforms while supporting a variety of dermatologic services.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
