Summary The position is assigned to Engineering Service at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System at the Tuskegee, AL Campus. Responsibilities The purpose of the position is to perform a wide range of work involving installing and recognizing the cause of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. CAVHCS consists of two primary campuses, Montgomery and Tuskegee, Health Care Clinic, community-based outpatient clinics Dothan, Dothan Mental Health, Fort Rucker Wiregrass, Columbus/Fort Benning Maxwell AFB and Monroeville. Travel between locations may be required as needed. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs routine maintenance on various DX and split system HVAC units, wall and ceiling mounted fan coil units, VAV boxes, roof mounted exhaust fans, condenser water cooling towers, steam coils and actuators, supply and return ventilation air handling units, reach-in and service line coolers. Incumbent also monitors and performs minor repairs, such as filter changes, oil renewal, and wall socket replacement to the dental vacuum, medical air and vacuum systems that do not compromise system integrity. Checks out the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems to locate and check elements such as those that control low side and high side pressure; the temperature of the cooling units; the temperatures of the liquid and suction lines; and the running time of the various mechanisms. Examines equipment components visually and audibly for the probability for leaks; and performs prescribed test procedures, reasons for equipment failure. Identifies faulty equipment causes and makes repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. Calculates airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for systems related to HVAC; locates and repairs faulty equipment swiftly in order to reduce inoperative time to a minimum; locates trouble before dismantling and makes repairs which insure proper functioning after assembly. Performs troubleshooting on systems that provide a variety of air conditioning and refrigeration functions for equipment failure. Performs energy management monitoring on the following systems related to HVAC and refrigeration: One 450 ton York Centrifugal chiller, two 200 ton York screw chillers and one 350 ton York air cooled chiller, medical refrigerators/freezers, walk-in coolers/freezers and water side economizers. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires carrying of equipment, tools and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds. Most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines and duct work. The incumbent is required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Most of the work is usually performed inside, but the incumbent is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units. The incumbent is occasionally subjected to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments; and exposed to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases that may cause toxic effects on eyes, skin, and internal organs. There is an occasional requirement to work outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Preferred Experience: EPA Certification: In Accordance with 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, EPA, people working in this @type of position with must have and maintain proper EPA Certifications for working with refrigerants. You must have these with EPA Certification Types I, II and III in order to meet the requirements of this position.
