Summary The Claims Assistant works as part of the Benefits and Enrollment Section of the Business Office within the Iowa City VA Health Care System (ICVAHCS). Primary duties are to help Veterans determine eligibility and entitlement for health care services in the VA system. Responsibilities The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) consists of a comprehensive Tertiary Care Level I VA Health Care System; eleven VA Clinics and two Homeless Veterans Outreach Centers and has an affiliate agreement with the top ranked University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. ICVAHCS is home to the Center for Access & Delivery Research and Evaluation (CADRE), one of the largest research departments in the VA. Assist Veterans in gathering information and consulting with veteran affairs offices. Assist Veterans with completion of financial assessments. Provide information to applicants or inquirers regarding VA medical care eligibility and entitlement requirements. Advise and assist individuals applying for special programs. Process admissions accurately and timely, determining bed availability according to policy. Maintain an electronic log of veterans reporting to the Patient Registration window requesting services. Resolve problems and complaints involving procedural administrative issues. Provide guidance to medical staff regarding administrative procedures, legal eligibility and entitlement of applicants, etc. Verify eligibility of Veterans for the hospital prior to transfer from another facility. Minimum Qualifications: You must qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: performing various administrative duties, such as completing forms, making eligibility determinations, and/or handling telephone contacts; providing assistance and guidance to a variety of customers; utilizing computer systems for data entry; and verifying the accuracy of information. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
