At Worthington Enterprises, we build long-term value through innovation, collaboration, and people-first leadership. We are looking for a Senior Accountant to join our team and play a key role in supporting financial reporting, analysis, and business partnership activities across the organization.
This role partners closely with business unit leadership, functional teams, and senior accounting staff to deliver accurate financial reporting, meaningful analysis, and insights that help drive business performance. Responsibilities include supporting the income statement, balance sheet, expense analysis, forecasting, monthly close activities, and other core accounting functions. The ideal candidate brings strong analytical capability, attention to detail, a continuous improvement mindset, and an interest in leveraging technology, automation, and data-driven insights to improve financial processes and decision-making.
This is a hybrid role based in our corporate office, with an expectation of working on-site at least three days per week to support collaboration, partnership, and team engagement.
Responsibilities
General Ledger: Apply professional accounting principles to maintain complete and accurate general ledger account balances and related managerial reports and financial statements. Reconcile sub-ledgers to general ledger accounts, review balances, prepare and/or communicate correcting journal entries, maintain the chart of accounts, and support monthly, quarterly, and annual accruals. Partners cross-functionally with teams including Finance, IT, and Operations to drive process improvements, automation initiatives, system enhancements, and operational efficiencies.
Research & Analysis: Perform analysis of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flows for assigned departments and/or business units. Analyze areas requiring a high degree of judgment, estimates, and subjectivity. Research accounting topics and prepare recommendations while serving as a business partner to improve earnings, processes, and operational effectiveness. Conduct root cause analysis and recommend solutions.
Financial Reporting: Prepare complex internal and external financial reports and statements in accordance with GAAP, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and supporting schedules. Support monthly and quarterly reporting by identifying trends, highlighting performance against plan and forecast, and communicating potential financial impacts. Assist in preparing reporting packages for Tax, Treasury, Risk Management, and other functional areas.
Financial Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting: Design and maintain complex budgets and forecasts using trend and analytical techniques. Collaborate closely with department and business leaders to develop assumptions, monitor changes throughout the fiscal year, and provide insights that support decision-making.
Automation & Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and improve accounting and financial processes through technology, data analytics, and continuous improvement initiatives. Support adoption of new tools, systems, and AI-enabled solutions that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and business insights.
Auditing: Assess internal controls and risk areas while supporting recommendations for improvement. Prepare and/or review audit schedules to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
Tax Accounting & Planning: Provide tax-related data and support to the tax department, including responding to questions related to sales, use, and personal property taxes, where applicable.
Cost Accounting: Evaluate processes for determining direct and indirect costs, overhead, and material costs. Analyze cost variances and recommend corrective actions where applicable.
Capital Planning & Appropriation: Support planning, modeling, and financial analysis projects, including preparing and reviewing Capital Appropriation Requests (CARs) and post-completion reviews. Assist with operating and financial projections supporting short-term and long-term business plans. Maintain and track fixed asset records where applicable.
Leadership: Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to interns and junior accounting staff while contributing to a collaborative and team-oriented environment.
Other Duties: Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Desired Experience & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
Strong understanding of GAAP and general accounting principles; SOX knowledge preferred
Experience with ERP systems such as JD Edwards and financial reporting tools such as Tagetik preferred
Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office skills
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Builds strong partnerships and effectively influences across teams and functions
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
