Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program , a student loan payment reimbursement program. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply. Responsibilities The Registered Nurse- Nurse Manager Mental Health ( NM-MH) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to patients. Duties include but are not limited to: Provides both direct clinical care and leadership to ensure high-quality, evidence-based nursing services are delivered within the Mental Health service line. Responsible for carrying out duties of typical of a Level III Registered Nurse, including comprehensive patient/triage assessments, medication administration, and management of complex psychiatric and medical conditions. Oversees nursing competencies and ensures regulatory compliance through staff training, performance evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, assigns tours of duty and shifts to maintain adequate staffing levels, and monitors performance metrics to promote a culture of safety and professional development. Responsible for mentoring and supporting nursing staff in their clinical and administrative functions, with a focus on fostering therapeutic environments that promote recovery and well-being for Veterans. Provides counsel to the MH Associate Chief of Staff ( MHACOS) and Mental Health-Integrated Clinical Community (MHICC) on strategy and implementation of nursing practice and the impact of nursing practice on the Mental Health Service Line. Responsible for executing medical regiments, including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed or otherwise legally authorized provider ( Alabama Board of Nursing). Executes position responsibilities that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. Leads and organizes delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning. Utilizes advance clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes. Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to assigned roles and responsibilities. Systematically evaluating current practice and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and /or organizational processes within an area of expertise. Additional duties include: Administrative: Maintains collaborative relationships with internal and external partners to ensure quality Veteran care and fulfill the facility mission. Facilitates effective communication among all Mental Health (MH) nursing staff and leadership, and ensures staff are informed of relevant events and updates. Oversees recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of MH nursing personnel, and manages staff recognition, scheduling, performance evaluations, leave approval, and compliance with required training. Participates in and represents MH nursing in facility meetings, committees, and interview panels related to staff selection and policy development. Monitors and manages accreditation readiness, policy compliance, continuous regulatory standards, and contributes to strategic planning for the MH service line. Clinical Administrative: Supervises and supports nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, NPs, and Assistant Nurse Managers) in competency assessment, performance improvement initiatives, and continuing education. Coordinates and monitors documentation practices, including unsigned notes and peer reviews, ensuring adherence to professional standards and privacy requirements. Identifies staff training needs, provides coaching and mentorship, and coordinates student placements and specialty education programs as needed. Clinical: Provides direct clinical care in mental health settings, including oversight and staffing of the Triage Clinic and coverage for additional clinics as needed. Ensures effective care delivery within scope of practice, utilizing various modalities, such as in-person, telehealth, and telehealth-to-home services. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.) Nurse I, Level III Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self-directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations. An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 2 years of professional nursing experience in which one year is equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2; OR a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the Nurse I, Level 2; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional professional nursing experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional professional nursing experience. Nurse II Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. A BSN with 2 years of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR an MSN with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR a Master's degree in a related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience; OR a Doctoral degree in a related field with a BSN with no additional professional nursing experience. Nurse III Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting.
