Summary The Therapeutic and Diagnostic Imaging (TDI) service at the Dayton VA Medical Center is looking for a Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist. The Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the preparation, calibration, and administration of radiopharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals (under the direction of an authorized user); the performance of quality control procedures; and the operation of imaging, laboratory, and computer instrumentation. Responsibilities Major duties include but are not limited to: Coordinate patient exams, staff breaks and other clinical issues within the nuclear medicine service. Respond to staffing shortages and/or increases in workload by reassigning work duties and requesting assistance from the nuclear medicine coordinator. Ensure proper billing and workload information for each patient's study. Work with staff to determine and meet all continuing education requirements. Point of contact for PACS issues within Nuclear Medicine Service. Explain procedures and positions patients for desired results. Observe patients during procedures and report complications or unusual events. Maintain a clean work area and adequate level of supplies withing assigned work areas. Provide clinical instruction to student nuclear medicine technologists from affiliated programs and facilitate the attainment of established program objectives. Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. Maintain records and files of patient exams and perform clerical and file room duties related to patient care. Be knowledgeable regarding possible side effects of radiopharmaceuticals and other medications and take immediate action and proper response to remedy any noted effects. Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals/pharmaceuticals through various routes of administration. Independently operation nuclear medicine equipment such as a gamma cameras, SPECT/CT and PET/CT and PET/CT scanner, well counters, GM survey meters, thyroid update system, dose calibrators for various patient procedures, and operate EKG monitoring/recording equipment during cardiac stress test procedures. Ability to analyze instance of increased radiation exposure levels and recommend measure to reduce them. Ability to calculate exposure rates. Other duties as assigned. Certification: All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following: (1) Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR (2) Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB. NOTE: Technologists functioning as multi-modality technologists require additional specific certifications as stated in assignment descriptions below. Exceptions: Non-certified applicants, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification, may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate NMT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification [within 1 year from the date of appointment] is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Grade Determination (GS11), Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist: Experience: For assignments above the journey level, the candidate must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled (GS9), and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
