Summary The Mail Clerk is responsible for sorting and routing mail and packages, performing clerical duties, faxing, stacking, bundling, wrapping outgoing materials, sorting bulk mail, rerouting misdirected mail, date stamping, counting mail, screening for priority items, prepares routing and control forms, maintains an up-to-date directory by name, room and telephone number, organization, and forwarding address. This position is located at James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Major duties and responsibilities include: Processing of incoming or outgoing mail; Ensures that incoming public inquiries and mail is properly opened, sorted, logged in, date stamped, and delivered to appropriate units, staff; Performs various related clerical duties such as faxing, stacking, bundling, wrapping of outgoing materials, sorting bulk mail; Determines full routing, number of copies required, and assigns due date in consideration of amount of time allowed by originator for reply; Performs morning and afternoon pickup and delivery of mail to offsite entities; Reviews all outgoing mail for proper/complete addressing, proper labeling, and proper packaging for postal service compliance; Reads and routes a large amount of general mail from private citizens and organizations requesting information; Ensures all safety restrictions and requirements are observed; Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-4 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: EXPERIENCE: You must possess at least one (1) full year of general experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of a position and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. General experience includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. One full year of graduate education is considered to be 18 semester hours.
