Summary This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Durham VA Medical Center (MC) Engineering Service, and serves as an Electronics Technician. The purpose of this position is to provide system and medical equipment analysis support through preventive maintenance inspections, assessments, instructional repairs, calibrations, installations, modification designations, and user training. Responsibilities The primary duties of this position entail analyzing, diagnosing, developing, planning, troubleshooting, and correcting equipment, system and subsystems issues or malfunctions, and correlations, to include programming, governed specification installations, and design placement of complex, computer-based systems, software, and electronics. Examples at the Durham VA include Fire Alarm, Nurse Call, Code Blue, and temperature Tracking, Patient Wandering and Security systems, to include Life Safety Code applications. The incumbent is responsible for comprehensive technical support of highly complex medical and non-medical direct patient care electronic systems and devices. Typical devices or systems include, but is not limited to, intelligent nurse call and code blue systems, patient wandering systems, quad/paraplegic environmental controls, audio/visual systems, intrusion/security alarm systems, computer driven fire alarm systems, refrigerant temperature tracking, pharmacy robotic equipment, 2-way radios, and surveillance closed circuit television systems. The paramount equipment is direct patient care and non-medical in nature. The incumbent performs electronically challenging interfacing such as, locks controlled by the Security system which is also tied into the Fire Alarm system to release in case of fire; Patient Wandering system integrates with the Security system via electronic door locks and closed circuit television cameras and monitors as well as integrating with the elevators and other alarm systems to control dementia patient access control. The incumbent must possess sufficient knowledge to recognize the ability to merge components of these different systems while assuring compatibility and continuity for the critical functions associated with the equipment This is applied at the Durham VA for a wide range of systems including but not limited to intelligent nurse call and code blue systems, patient wandering systems, patient environmental controls, audio/visual systems, security alarm systems, trending and tracking computer programs and systems, computer driven fire alarm systems, 2- way radios, and surveillance closed circuit television and satellite systems. The incumbent recognizes hazardous conditions and procedures with e l e c t r o n i c instrumentation systems, and initiates appropriate preventive or corrective action; and determines whether a system is to be removed from, be restored to, or allowed to remain in service in clinical areas. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/18/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. This experience must have included the use of schematic diagrams, a variety of test equipment, and the application of appropriate electronic formulas involved in such duties as testing, troubleshooting, modifying, designing, calibrating, installing, maintaining, repairing, constructing, developing, and instructing on electronic equipment, or similar functions. Experience in developing policies, standards, and procedures for maintenance, installation, or similar functions, provided the work clearly shows that the applicant applied a specialized knowledge of the theories and principles of a variety of electronic systems or equipment You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-10 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Experience in the theories, techniques, and applications of electronics, basic electricity, and occasional engineering mechanics and correction of malfunctioning equipment and systems. Experience working with complex equipment, electronics theories, electronic operating procedures and characteristics of equipment. Experience with troubleshooting the electronic equipment and solving technical problems. Skilled in the techniques, theories, practical applications, and operational characteristics of electronic equipment, electronics and electricity in conjunction with hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical functions. Experience with a range of computer based electronic equipment systems conversant to capabilities, limitations, operations, design characteristics and functional use of a variety of systems and measurement instruments. Physical Requirements: The person handles objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds routinely and occasionally handles objects of up to fifty (50) pounds. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions. The work also requires prolonged periods of standing and walking. Technical, academic, and mental demands are considerable. The work performed is of a precise nature, requiring prolonged concentration. The person often works under conditions of stress caused by the nature of the work and the necessity to meet deadlines. Person is required to frequently travel to perform work at remote sites. Emergencies at these locations will require immediate response and potentially afterhours response allowing very limited time for notice and preparation.
