Job Title: INDOT Construction InspectorJob Description
The INDOT Construction Inspector provides on-site inspection, documentation, and quality assurance for state and federally funded transportation construction projects. This role ensures that contractors follow INDOT standards, project plans, specifications, and applicable regulations while maintaining project safety and quality. The inspector monitors daily construction activities, verifies materials and workmanship, and maintains accurate project records to support timely, safe, and compliant project delivery. The position works closely with project engineers, contractors, utility partners, and other stakeholders to resolve field issues and keep projects on schedule.
Responsibilities
Monitor contractor operations on roadway, bridge, drainage, and traffic control activities to ensure compliance with INDOT plans, specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards.
Prepare detailed daily reports documenting work performed, quantities, weather conditions, equipment used, and any deviations, issues, or delays encountered.
Verify that materials delivered and installed meet INDOT specifications, and coordinate sampling and testing with district laboratories.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, special provisions, and contract documents to ensure accurate implementation of design requirements in the field.
Measure and document quantities for contractor payment, and verify the accuracy of pay item calculations and field measurements.
Monitor temporary traffic control setups to ensure proper installation, maintenance, and adjustment of devices that protect workers and the traveling public.
Identify non-conforming work, safety concerns, and schedule risks, communicate findings to the project engineer, and assist in resolving field conflicts.
Monitor erosion control, stormwater management, and environmental protection measures to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and project requirements.
Coordinate and communicate effectively with contractors, utilities, local agencies, and internal INDOT staff to support project progress and resolve issues promptly.
Participate in punch-list and final inspections, verify completion of contract items, and assist with preparing and organizing project closeout documentation.
Use construction management and documentation tools such as SiteManager to record project information and maintain organized, accurate records.
Support a culture of safety and quality by following established procedures and contributing to continuous improvement of inspection practices.
Essential Skills
At least 2 years of experience performing construction inspection on civil projects such as roadway, public works, or utility projects.
Minimum of 2 out of 6 INDOT certifications in relevant inspection or testing disciplines.
Experience with SiteManager or similar construction management and documentation software.
Knowledge of civil construction practices, including roadway, concrete, and general transportation engineering concepts.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Strong attention to detail in documenting quantities, work performed, and field conditions.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with contractors, engineers, utilities, and agency staff.
Ability to identify non-conforming work, safety issues, and schedule risks and escalate them appropriately.
Basic understanding of environmental compliance requirements, including erosion control and stormwater management.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel to and work at active construction sites within the assigned district.
Ability to work in a mix of outdoor and in-vehicle or office settings, including in varying weather and site conditions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
All 6 INDOT certifications in inspection and materials testing disciplines are preferred.
ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification or experience with concrete testing and inspection is highly beneficial.
Familiarity with transportation engineering and roadway construction standards and practices.
Experience with municipal, state, or federally funded infrastructure projects.
NICET, OSHA, or other industry credentials related to construction inspection, safety, or materials testing are advantageous.
Interest in developing technical skills in materials testing, geotechnical work, and construction oversight.
Motivation to pursue clear career pathways into senior inspector, project management, lab leadership, or engineering support roles.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities on active construction projects.
Problem-solving mindset with the ability to support field issue resolution in collaboration with project engineers and contractors.
Work Environment
This role involves a mix of outdoor fieldwork and office or vehicle-based documentation. Inspectors spend significant time on active construction sites, where conditions can change quickly based on project stage, weather, and contractor activity. Work may include exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and varying temperatures. When not in the field, the inspector completes reports, documentation, and coordination tasks using computers and construction management software such as SiteManager. The position offers exposure to major transportation and municipal infrastructure projects and provides a setting focused on technical skill development, professional certifications, and long-term career growth in construction inspection and engineering support.

The pay range for this position is $52000.00 - $72800.00/yr.
