The Construction Inspector performs field inspections and construction materials testing on a variety of commercial, institutional, industrial, and land development projects. This role focuses on testing soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel, documenting results accurately, and supporting quality assurance on active construction sites. Responsibilities
Perform construction inspections on active construction sites for private new construction and land development projects.
Conduct field testing of construction materials, including soils, concrete, asphalt, and reinforcing steel, following established procedures and standards.
Use a nuclear gauge to test soil density and other properties in accordance with safety guidelines and company protocols.
Carry and handle testing materials and equipment, including buckets and other tools, as needed to complete field tests.
Use a tablet or similar device to document test results, observations, and inspection findings in a clear and timely manner.
Interpret project plans and site layouts, using basic map reading skills to locate test points and inspection areas.
Apply basic math skills to calculate measurements, quantities, and test-related data.
Communicate effectively with site personnel and internal team members to coordinate inspections, testing schedules, and access to work areas.
Work independently in the field, traveling to multiple job sites daily and managing assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working on construction sites and while handling nuclear gauge equipment.
Maintain testing equipment, including nuclear gauges and tablets, in good working condition and report any issues promptly.
Pursue and maintain relevant industry certifications to enhance technical capabilities and support career progression.
Essential Skills
Experience or strong interest in construction, construction inspection, or construction materials testing.
Ability to perform construction materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soil, and reinforcing steel.
Ability to safely use a nuclear gauge for field testing after appropriate training.
Good verbal communication skills to interact with site personnel and internal team members.
Willingness to learn and develop new technical skills and certifications.
Comfort working outside in varying weather conditions on active construction sites.
Basic map reading skills to navigate and understand site layouts.
Basic math skills to support measurements, calculations, and test documentation.
Ability to work independently and manage daily travel to multiple job sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience with construction materials testing such as concrete testing is a plus.
ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification is highly valued and may support advancement.
NICET certification in relevant disciplines is considered an asset.
Familiarity with inspection processes and documentation on construction projects is beneficial.
Comfort using tablets or mobile devices for field documentation and reporting.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate record-keeping.
Motivation to obtain additional industry-recognized certifications to support career growth.
Interest in long-term career development within construction inspection and quality assurance.
Work Environment
This role is primarily field-based, with work performed at various construction sites associated with private new construction and land development projects, including commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. The standard schedule is approximately 40 hours per week, with typical hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some night shifts may be required, and as weather warms, there are opportunities for overtime. The work is highly independent, with daily travel to multiple job sites. Team members may pick up nuclear gauge equipment from a designated site before their shift if they do not store equipment themselves. The environment involves working outdoors in a range of weather conditions and around active construction activities. The role uses technologies and equipment such as nuclear gauges, tablets for documentation, and standard construction testing tools. The expected attire includes work boots, jeans, and a button-up shirt, suitable for field conditions. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
