Job Title: Concrete Batch Plant Operator
Job Description
The Concrete Batch Plant Operator operates a computer-controlled concrete batching system to produce high-quality concrete mixes according to precise specifications. This role combines batch plant operation, equipment maintenance, quality control, and basic heavy equipment operation in a fast-paced industrial environment. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and efficiently throughout the full production cycle, from start-up and batching to end-of-day cleanup.
Responsibilities
Operate computer-controlled batching systems, including the Command Alkon system, to produce concrete mixes according to specified formulas and production requirements.
Run the mixer machine and batch plant equipment accurately and efficiently to meet daily production targets.
Monitor material quality throughout the batching process, including managing moisture levels, testing batches for slump and air content, and making real-time adjustments to maintain quality standards.
Review finished concrete for inconsistencies or abnormal appearance to ensure it meets established quality requirements before use or shipment.
Perform routine maintenance on batch plant equipment, including cleaning, greasing, and basic repairs to keep machinery in safe and reliable operating condition.
Use tools such as cutting torches or welders, when qualified, to support maintenance and repair activities on plant equipment.
Maintain accurate daily logs of batch weights, mix changes, production volumes, and raw material usage to support inventory control and production tracking.
Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues that may impact plant performance or product quality.
Follow preventive maintenance schedules and document maintenance activities to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
Occasionally operate heavy equipment such as loaders or skid steers to move raw materials and support production needs.
Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards, including end-of-day cleanup of equipment and workspaces after production.
Adhere strictly to all safety rules and procedures, including OSHA-related practices, and actively contribute to a safe working environment.
Start the day with maintenance checks and tasks on plant equipment, transition into concrete batching and pouring for the majority of the shift, and complete thorough cleaning and shutdown procedures at the end of the day.
Collaborate with maintenance technicians, quality technicians, and other plant personnel to resolve issues quickly and maintain efficient operations.
Essential Skills
Hands-on experience in concrete or asphalt production, batching, or related heavy industrial environments.
Proficiency operating computer-controlled batching systems or similar automated industrial equipment, with the ability to learn the Command Alkon system.
Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair equipment issues in an industrial setting.
Basic understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and industrial automation as they relate to plant equipment.
Familiarity with hydraulics and pneumatics used in industrial machinery and batching systems.
Ability to interpret basic industrial information such as system indicators, equipment status, and process parameters; blueprint reading experience is beneficial.
Experience performing preventive maintenance and maintenance repair on mechanical and electrical components.
Ability to work safely with tools and equipment, including cutting torches and welders, when required and appropriately trained.
Physical ability to stand for long periods, climb ladders, and lift up to 40 pounds regularly during the shift.
Comfort working in an industrial environment where concrete is produced and conditions can be dirty or dusty.
Strong troubleshooting skills to quickly identify and resolve issues that affect batching, quality, or equipment performance.
Reliable work habits with the ability to work full shifts that typically start around 7:00 or 8:00 AM and may extend to 4:00 or 5:00 PM, with flexibility for later hours as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Previous experience as a batch plant operator, maintenance technician, or quality technician in concrete or asphalt operations.
Experience with robotics or industrial automation in a manufacturing or plant environment.
Experience in industrial maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Experience with troubleshooting and installation of industrial equipment and controls.
ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification is preferred but not required.
Ability to adapt to new software systems and willingness to be trained on batching and material handling software.
Comfort operating heavy equipment such as loaders or skid steers to support material handling needs.
Strong attention to detail and quality mindset to ensure concrete consistently meets required specifications.
Effective communication skills to coordinate with operations, maintenance, and quality teams.
Why Work Here?
You will join a growing organization that invests in your development and provides hands-on training, including support to learn specialized batching software and plant systems. The setting can be dirty and dusty due to concrete materials and plant operations, and you will spend most of the day on your feet, moving between equipment, climbing ladders, and working both indoors and outdoors around the plant. You will work with computer-controlled batching systems, mixers, loaders, skid steers, and various maintenance tools, including cutting torches and welders when needed.
