Job Title: Bilingual Medical Assistant
Job Description
The Medical Assistant provides high-quality, team-based patient care in a safe and friendly environment. Working under the direct supervision of a clinician, this role combines clinical and administrative responsibilities to promote health and wellness, support chronic disease management, and ensure a positive experience for patients and families. The Medical Assistant performs laboratory testing and phlebotomy procedures, assists with patient intake and education, and supports the care team through accurate documentation and coordination of care.
Responsibilities
Deliver team-based patient care under the direct supervision of a clinician for both clinical and administrative functions.
Support clinicians and care management teams in assessing patients and maintaining chronic disease management.
Perform laboratory testing procedures according to established protocols and quality standards.
Report laboratory results to a healthcare clinician and promptly alert them to any critical or out-of-range values, documenting critical reports accurately.
Perform phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks, in a safe and professional manner.
Prepare specimens for reference laboratory send-outs, including proper labeling, resulting, and completion of billing information.
Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly quality control activities, including instrument maintenance and related checks.
Obtain and document patient intake vital signs, including but not limited to height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate, and repeat and notify the clinician of any abnormal findings.
Interview patients using age-appropriate and specialty-specific approaches, and accurately document and update medical records.
Document chief complaint, current medications including drug name, dose, route, and schedule, as well as medication and food allergies with reaction and severity.
Update and maintain accurate documentation of vaccine history, medical, surgical, family, and social histories, including any barriers to care and home status.
Obtain necessary medical records, consultation notes, hospital inpatient and emergency department discharge summaries, and diagnostic and laboratory results for clinician review.
Coordinate treatment follow-up as needed based on clinician direction and available records.
Use electronic health record (EHR) and electronic medical record (EMR) systems for documentation, scheduling, and data entry.
Assist with appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and front desk support as needed.
Perform patient triage within scope, including collecting patient histories, assessing basic needs, and prioritizing care appropriately.
Take and record patient vitals and blood pressure accurately and consistently.
Provide patient education and support related to internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and other assigned specialties.
Perform blood draws and specimen collection in a manner that promotes patient comfort and safety.
Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team, including in bilingual settings where applicable.
Essential Skills
Medical Assistant diploma or certification required, OR a minimum of 1+ year of Medical Assistant experience in lieu of diploma/certification.
Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Active and valid driver's license required.
Demonstrated experience in medical assisting and patient care in a healthcare setting.
Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
Ability to perform and document laboratory testing procedures and quality control activities.
Strong skills in obtaining and recording patient vital signs, including height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate.
Experience using electronic health record (EHR) and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare workflows.
Ability to perform appointment scheduling, insurance verification, and front desk tasks.
Competence in triage within scope, including patient intake and assessment.
Accurate data entry skills and attention to detail in documentation.
Ability to provide patient education and communicate clearly with diverse patient populations.
Capability to work in internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatric care environments.
Basic computer proficiency and ability to operate clinical equipment safely.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or equivalent credential is beneficial.
Bilingual communication skills are highly valued for patient interaction.
Experience in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, or similar outpatient settings.
Familiarity with appointment scheduling systems and insurance verification processes.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and dedication to patient-centered care.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based care model with clinicians and care management teams.
Comfort with patient-facing responsibilities and delivering education and support to patients and families.
Work Environment
This is a patient-facing, clinical role in an indoor healthcare setting. The Medical Assistant works closely with patients, clinicians, and care teams, frequently operating computers and using electronic health record systems for documentation and scheduling. The position involves regular use of hands and fingers requiring manual dexterity, as well as reaching outward and above the shoulder to handle equipment and supplies. The role may involve exposure to typical clinical hazards such as bodily fluids, laboratory materials, and medical equipment, with appropriate safety protocols and protective measures in place.
