Summary The Supervisory Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (Specialty Care/Inpatient Medicine) must be a licensed pharmacist. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the duties and responsibilities of clinical pharmacists specialist who routinely work in our specialty care clinics. This includes all clinical pharmacists who work in the areas of, but not limited to, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Oncology, Rheumatology, Anticoagulation, Palliative Care, Infectious Disease, Long Term Care, etc. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to: Oversees and monitors the day-to-day provision of pharmaceutical services provided by clinical pharmacists assigned to work in the specialty care clinics and inpatient medicine wards. Initiates and/or maintains VA required (or when feasible, recommended) pharmaceutical services within the specialty care and acute care program. Prepares duty schedules, including relief, rotation and vacation schedules for clinical pharmacists assigned to perform duties and responsibilities within the specialty care program. Evaluates the performance of clinical pharmacists specialists, and other pharmacy related personnel assigned to work in the specialty care clinics or inpatient medicine wards and seeks opportunities to help these individuals continue to improve their overall performance. Actively participates, coordinates and oversees all clinical pharmacy activities within our specialty care program and inpatient medicine wards and establishes and maintains various Pharmacy operated specialty care clinics. Works closely with the medical staff in to ensure safe and effective patient care involving Pharmacy staff, residents, interns and students. Provides comprehensive medication management including initiation, modification, and continuation of medication regimens, ordering of laboratory tests and diagnostics studies, preforming physical assessments, and taking independent corrective action, as appropriate, to maximize positive drug therapy outcomes. Participates in establishing medication levels for various medications stocked in the Acute Care areas and Specialty Care Clinics as necessary. Works various shifts as needed to ensure the effective delivery of pharmaceutical services within the specialty care clinics and inpatient wards. Actively works on cost saving initiative and other projects related to clinical pharmacy. Interviews and screens applicants for clinical pharmacy specialist positions with input as needed from specialty care or inpatient medicine team members. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure. A pharmacist who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section B, paragraph 16. Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor GS-13 Experience: In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Assignments. Candidates at this grade level are to be in one of the assignments listed below. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to both patients and health care staff. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards for their program area. Ability to solve problems, coordinate and organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their program area or area of clinical expertise. Expert knowledge of a specialized area of clinical pharmacy practice or specialty area of pharmacy. Advanced skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing/sitting for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs., and bending/stooping.
