Summary This position is under the Patient Care Services (PCS), Procedural Medicine, Phlebotomy section. The service, a clinical support service for patients being treated at the Medical Center, provides phlebotomy and support of diagnostic testing 24 hours per day, seven days per week including weekends and holidays. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Duties are not all inclusive): Venous Puncture/Specimen Collection: The majority of the incumbent's day will be spent performing routine venipuncture specimen collections from outpatients Monday - Friday. The incumbent will be required to proficiently collect these blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or repeat venous puncture, and ensure that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. Responsible for proper patient identification, proper sample procurement, and proper specimen labeling guidelines. Performs phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of steps approved for sample collection. Independently responsible for selecting the best venipuncture site, most suitable phlebotomy equipment ( needle @type, size and length), most appropriate cleansing agent(s), proper collection vials and assessing the patient's condition before, during and after the procedure if deemed medically necessary. Responsible for preparation of the collection site and for drawing blood cultures without contamination including training on new blood culture kits. Attends to the patients while in their care during the phlebotomy procedure including helping patients in the restroom if patient needs assistance with urine collection. Is attentive to patient needs, actions and complaints. Has knowledge of medical conditions/therapy (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation, fainting, hematomas) and applies that knowledge while the patient is in their care. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion with considerable walking and long periods of standing. These risks include infectious material, carcinogenic materials, caustic agents, noxious fumes, flammables, and needle sticks.
