Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is part of the Social Work Service Line. The incumbent serves as a social worker at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in the Substance Disorders Treatment Program (SDTP) within the Mental Health Care Line (MHCL) at the medical center and can offer virtual services to Veterans enrolled in SDTP at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The duties of this Social Worker position may include, but are not limited to: Performs case finding functions and outreach, identifying and screening patients for psychosocial needs. Incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to independently (or under clinical supervision) implement treatment modalities, provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice and within collaboration of the treatment team. Conduct clinical assessments for the purpose of diagnosing mental, emotional, behavioral, addictive and developmental disorders and disabilities either independently or under clinical supervision. Provides crisis intervention services, seeking to address the cause, as well as the presenting complaint, coordinates family conferences, and serves as liaison to family members. Develops and implements appropriate evidence and assessment-based, person-centered treatment plans. Offers psychosocial interventions and administers measurement-based care to measures outcomes to interventions and track Veteran's progress. Completes documentation in the clinical record related to interaction with individuals served, families and other service providers in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with professional ethics and with both MEDVAMC and State regulations. Coordinates community-based services, including information and referral for additional services from other VA programs, Care in The Community, residential treatment facility placement, other government programs, and community agency programs. Knowledge of Veterans benefits and services relating to special programs, service-connected compensation, non-service connected pension. Identifies high-risk Veterans and provides case management services. Knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology. Provides consultation services to other staff regarding the psychosocial needs of Veterans and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and adherence to treatment plan. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. This exception only applies at the GS-9 grade level. GS-11 (Full Performance) Level: Experience and Licensure: Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, (VA or non VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR, Education: In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. AND, Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs in their resume:: Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Preferred Experience: Experience providing evidence-based psychotherapies including but not limited to: MI/MET, CBT, ACT and experience providing measurement based care (BAM-R, PHQ9, GAD7, AUIDT C, etc). Working in an outpatient mental health setting on an interdisciplinary mental health team providing individual and group psychotherapy to patients with substance use disorders. Adapting technology and computer assisted programs to deliver treatments and improve treatment outcomes. Experience completing diagnostic mental health intakes.
