About the Work Unit
The work unit exists to maintain the Tunnel systems in Region 1. It oversees 9 tunnel bores (Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnels, Veterans Memorial Tunnels and 5 tunnels on US 6). This unit performs a combination of High Voltage electronic/electrical work in the installation, calibration, operation, repair, maintenance, highway lighting,
warning beacons, interconnect communications, dynamic message signs and ITS devices, roadway repairs within the Region in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Manual Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), local city, county, state and federal regulations and the National Electrical Code(NEC). Install, maintain, inspect, and repair electrical elements within CDOT buildings, facilities, and structures within the Region in accordance with all local city, county, state and federal regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC). This unit also responds to emergency within the tunnels.
About the Position
This position supervises the operation, maintenance, and safety of tunnel electrical systems and associated equipment. The supervisor ensures continuous, compliant, and safe tunnel operations, provides technical guidance to staff, coordinates emergency response, and serves as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
The position operates within a 24/7 environment and requires sound judgment, regulatory knowledge, and leadership to maintain public safety and system reliability. Responsible for training and mentoring employees so they can attain their Electrical Journeyman's License. This position makes decisions to plan, develop, administer, and manage programs, guidelines, rules, standards, budgets, personnel, equipment, building, grounds, contracts, and emergency response incidents.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
Plans, organizes, directs maintenance activities for the Tunnel program, within assigned areas.
Lead and direct the installation, reconstruction, repair and scheduled maintenance of traffic electrical equipment, coordinating crews and resources to ensure safe, reliable and compliant operation of roadway traffic systems.
Plans Maintenance Levels of Service (MLOS) operating budget, monitoring, and allocating current fiscal year budgets and departmental objectives to properly administer programs.
Leads the implementation of the strategic plan by prioritizing initiatives, allocating resources, and overseeing tunnel program delivery.
Analyzes and monitors all system reports related to maintenance operations to effectively manage the assigned areas. Implements and/or recommends changes in operations.
Acts as a liaison and represents CDOT in dealings with the public, other governmental agencies, County Commissioners, contractors, and the media. Represents the region on committees, as well as task forces both internal and external pertaining to all aspects of public works.
Makes oral presentations on budget, maintenance procedures, equipment fleet, long-range planning and staffing.
Responsible for incident management 24 hours a day, 7 days a week of all statewide transportation related emergencies due to blizzards, rockslides, floods, avalanches, fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous material spills which may result in closure of transportation corridors by utilization of preplanned personnel, equipment and materials.
Performs personnel management by developing and implementing selection, performance, and evaluation standards; resolves grievances and other disputes, taking appropriate action involving all aspects of human resources development and behavioral requirements.
Directs and administers training to obtain and maintain a productive, effective, and efficient workforce by reviewing and analyzing needs on a continuous basis.
Prepares subordinates for promotional opportunities by using various department resources.
Manages and directs maintenance supervisors in the field, directing daily maintenance activities to ensure MLOS goals are met within Transportation Commission established budgets per Maintenance Program Area (MPA).
Abides by all safety regulation, wearing all required personal protective equipment and attends all required safety meetings and works with Region Safety Officer to implement new statewide safety initiatives.

Work Environment
Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
This is considered a Critical Position and can be expected to remain, or return to their worksite, when responding to emergency situations.
Daytime travel during work hours required for safety meetings, project reviews, patrol inspections, emergencies, snow events, bridge repairs, building inspections, and other issues.
Approximately 40% spent in the field, 60% spent in the office
Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Work location will be 11,160 feet above sea level

Experience Only:
At least five (5) years of experience i n traffic/road/highway maintenance or emergency services, or ITS equipment and Electrical power repairs of medium voltage of which at least three years must be as a supervisor of traffic/highway maintenance or emergency services or Electrical Crews and repairs (See definition below)

A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least five (5) years of road/highway maintenance experience, three years of which included supervisory responsibilities.
Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in Highway maintenance management or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.
