Summary This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs Engineering Service, Maintenance and Repair Section. The work involves installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility supply, and disposal systems. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to: Repairs Plumbing Systems: The work involves repairing new and existing utility supply, and disposal systems. Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, distribution systems, water closets, tubs and showers. Works from building plans, blueprints, to locate existing utilities and isolation valves of systems and equipment. Uses tools and equipment common to the plumbing trade such, mercury gauges, sewer machines, closet auger, and hydrostatic pumps. Installs Plumbing Systems: Determines and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems. Installs equipment by completing the routing and placement of systems leading to the equipment, connecting, and testing the equipment. Modifies Plumbing Systems: Modifies systems tapping main lines, and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope. The plumber tests and makes needed adjustments to systems and equipment for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The plumbing worker is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in bad weather. Occasionally makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones and has frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns and infections. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
