Role Overview:

The Staff Accountant supports the organization by performing a broad range of accounting functions, including maintaining the general ledger, preparing financial analyses, and managing key cash-related activities. This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a high level of accuracy, and the ability to work collaboratively across the organization. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting efficient and reliable financial operations.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $50,820.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

Reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies.

Prepare journal entries and research items impacting account balances.

Monitor, record, and analyze monthly interest income on short-term investments.

Manage cash activities, initiate ACH and wire transfers, and communicate with bank personnel as needed.

Prepare monthly financial statement analyses and assemble reporting packets for leadership and the Commission.

Generate weekly sales and expense reports for internal stakeholders.

Prepare annuity amortization schedules as needed.

Review monthly bank analysis charges for accuracy and reasonableness.

Prepare for audits by compiling financial data, conducting detailed analyses, and delivering timely responses to auditor requests.

Assist with budgeting, variance analysis, and forecasting for cash- and investment-related accounts.

Record capital asset activity and lead the annual capital asset inventory audit.

Collect and consolidate departmental budget inputs to assemble the fiscal year budget.

Maintain and enhance cash management and accounting procedures.

Stay current on technology and software enhancements to improve efficiency and security.

Assist with Hoosier Lottery accounting responsibilities during the Indiana State Fair.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, financial management, or a related field preferred, with at least one year of professional accounting or banking experience.

Strong attention to detail, with a demonstrated commitment to accuracy and completeness.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, adept at examining situations and recommending effective solutions.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Solid understanding of accounting and banking principles, including GAAP.

Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and meet deadlines.

Experience using computerized accounting systems.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
