Summary The Motor Vehicle Operator must possess thorough knowledge of all linen items, uniform articles, quotas for using activities, distribution points, collection locations,schedule of pickups and deliveries, and uniform identification system. Responsibilities Incumbent must be skilled in handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing and driving the vehicle. Must have the ability to judge overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance, etc. Must be able to recognize hazardous conditions and avoid them. Must have the ability to read and write at a level which will enable him/her to understand traffic signs and posted rules and regulations, and to complete any reports that might be required on VA grounds. Must know how to load, arrange, and secure cargo to prevent overloading, shifting, or falling off vehicle. Major duties include: Safely operate light and heavy trucks, 2 1/2 to 5 ton and to handle material and supplies. Load and unload supplies, which may require additional physical effort due to weights and poundage. Typical supplies loaded are empty and filled / soiled weighted laundry carts. Operate standard box trucks or commercial vehicles in making wide turns, braking, and backing up. Maintain safety of passengers, supplies, commerce etc. during transport to and from all customer locations. Use expert judgement while operating large commercial vehicles in making wide turns, braking, and backing up.
