Job Description
The Role
The Advanced Manufacturing Technician provides primary technical support for Gear Center machining operations while also supporting gear inspection, metrology, and electric motor proto@type builds. This role requires strong multi-discipline capability across machining, inspection, electromechanical assembly, and troubleshooting.
You will set up and run precision manufacturing equipment, validate part quality through inspection systems, support proto@type motor builds, and collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering on tooling, fixturing, and process improvements.
What You'll Do
Gear Center - Primary Responsibilities
Interpret work orders, engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and machining parameters to define machining plans.
Program, set up, and operate CNC mills/lathes and gear-manufacturing equipment (hobbing, honing, grinding).
Install and adjust chucks, tools, fixtures, attachments, and workholding; perform machine setup verification and first-piece validation.
Monitor machining operations, diagnose malfunctions, adjust programs, and replace tooling as needed to maintain accuracy and surface finish requirements.
Perform preventive maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and escalate mechanical/electrical issues as required.
Manage in-process material flow, stock levels, and tooling inventory to support proto@type schedules.
Inspection - Secondary Responsibilities
Read and interpret part prints, gear charts, spline data, GD&T, and specification sheets.
Program and operate gear-inspection systems (Gleason, Klingelnberg) and interpret inspection charts for corrective action.
Program and operate CMM equipment for gears, shafts, bearings, housings, and drivetrain components.
Perform surface-finish inspection and open-setup (surface plate) measurement on precision features.
Generate inspection reports for proto@type/low-volume builds and disposition nonconforming parts per GMS requirements.
Support root-cause investigations by performing data analysis and recommending inspection methods.
E-Motor - As-Needed Support Responsibilities
Support proto@type and pre-production electric motor builds per build schedules.
Assist with defect analysis, repair, and rework activities.
Operate E-motor lab equipment: presses, welders, wire-forming equipment, balancing systems, ovens, induction heaters, surge/hi-pot testers, and electromechanical test equipment.
Operate general machine-shop equipment for fixture modifications, tooling fabrication, and process development support.
Perform electrical and mechanical testing per authorized procedures.
Safety, Quality & Continuous Improvement
Follow all plant safety standards, complete required corporate training, and support a safe working environment.
Document machining, inspection, and build activities in production/quality logs.
Communicate open items and shift handoffs to maintain cross-shift continuity.
Participate in continuous-improvement, problem-solving, and standardization activities.
Maintain technical proficiency through training and technical literature.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
7+ years of combined experience in machining, inspection, or proto@type manufacturing environments.
Strong machining capability including programming and operation of CNC mills, lathes, and/or gear-manufacturing equipment.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and precision machining specifications.
Proficiency with CMM programming/operation, gear-inspection systems, and surface-finish measurement tools.
Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining, metrology, electromechanical systems, and relevant math principles.
Demonstrated analytical and troubleshooting capability for moderately complex machining, inspection, and proto@type issues.
Proficiency in computer-based reporting and documentation (MS Office, data entry, inspection reporting).
Ability to work weekends, overtime, and off-shifts as needed.
Ability to support multiple operational areas based on business requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Proto@type or pre-production manufacturing experience.
Gear-manufacturing and gear-inspection experience (hobbing, grinding, inspection systems, charts).
Electric motor or electromechanical assembly/testing experience.
Experience supporting cross-functional operations (machining, inspection, assembly).
Familiarity with GMS Built-In-Quality methodologies or similar structured quality systems.
