Your Opportunity
We are seeking a California energy market leader to contribute to a purpose-driven organization focused on the pursuit and delivery of environmental solutions. The successful candidate will bring strong market insight and demonstrated experience across electric and gas utilities, renewable and alternative energy markets, and competitive transmission in California, with the ability to drive growth across the US West and support client portfolios nationwide.
This role is responsible for growing and strengthening the Investor-Owned Utility portfolio while expanding relationships with high growth, high potential clients across renewables and emerging energy markets. The leader will identify and win large transmission and distribution programs by leveraging Stantec's global environmental services capabilities and existing client relationships, with particular emphasis on positioning the firm for competitive transmission opportunities in the CAISO region. The position drives top line growth through an integrated services approach, partners with Sector Leaders and Regional Practice Leaders on planning and performance programs, and builds, develops, and retains high performing teams of specialists, project managers, and account leaders while advancing in house expertise, innovation, and best practices.
The role provides strategic and visible leadership across the Power sector, including Transmission and Distribution and Renewables, by identifying industry trends, anticipating near and long-term client needs, and shaping a forward-looking growth strategy for environmental services. Responsibilities include directing marketing and business development efforts, providing thought leadership that elevates Stantec's profile in power and energy transition markets, and collaborating closely with account managers, regional leaders, and technical leadership to deliver safe, profitable, and sustainable outcomes while reinforcing a strong culture of safety, ethics, and accountability.
The position primarily supports the Environmental Services US West leadership team, contributing to a growing environmental assessment, permitting, design, and compliance practice of more than 600 professionals across the region, while also engaging with client portfolios and partners across the United States and other business lines. Working in a highly collaborative environment with Business Operations Leaders, Practice Leaders, Sector Leaders, Key Account Managers, and project teams, this leader helps identify and manage key accounts, pursue new opportunities, solicit client feedback, and build a culturally strong, high performing business that delivers quality, technical excellence, and lasting community impact.
Your Key Responsibilities
Client Focus:
Lead and grow trusted client relationships across the Power sector, with primary emphasis on California based Investor-Owned Utilities including San Diego Gas & Electric, SoCalGas, and other IOUs in California and beyond, while also supporting renewable, alternative energy, and emerging energy transition clients.
Drive client relationship strategy in partnership with Principals, Business Center Leaders, and account teams to achieve strong client satisfaction results across the Business Center.
Serve as a senior advisor to clients by understanding market drivers, regulatory environments, and delivery risks associated with power, utilities, renewables, and competitive transmission projects.
Personally lead and support key client accounts within the Business Center, exceeding client expectations through proactive account management and responsiveness.
Provide staff mentorship and succession planning on key accounts for sustainable growth.
Cultivate strong client and agency relationships, introduce appropriate Stantec staff into those relationships, and maintain awareness of upcoming opportunities aligned with sector focused growth initiatives, including CAISO competitive transmission programs.
Lead and participate in pursuits and campaigns focused on the Power and Energy sector, supporting client expansion and new market entry.
Achieve client and proposal specific marketing and business development sales goals, including internal cross selling initiatives, with a primary focus on external facing client and pursuit activities.
Support completion of a minimum of four client feedback surveys annually and ensure issues are addressed through defined action plans and follow through.
Business Development and Collaboration:
Actively contribute to win strategies.
Be involved at a hands-on level in key pursuits as needed.
Track pursuit success rate and return on investment rate on client-by-client basis.
Focus on developing and leading business development, key pursuit and sales strategy and expanding our reach and client base utilizing strong marketing, business development, sales account management plans.
Contribute to development and management of the M&BD plan for the BC, including cross selling.
Increase visibility of Stantec by sharing our knowledge and innovation stories through key client engagements to enhance our reputation and drive revenue.
Establish an effective Go/No Go Review process with Principals and track compliance.
Partner with our leaders to drive collaboration on pursuits across geographies and business lines.
Utilize and ensure the opportunity Pipeline is maintained and monitor to optimize business development plans and employee utilization rates.
Maintain and enhance local marketplace reputation through established relationships and support of regional leadership.
Develop and maintain Stantec's integrated practice in the specified BC. Which includes:
The maintenance of a cohesive Stantec brand,
Key client and account development and maintenance,
Market and community outreach and engagement.
Accountable to achieve organic growth targets of the BC.
Project Focus:
Contribute as needed to project delivery efforts, in a Principal or Strategic Advisory role, and on projects should issues impacting client satisfaction or project management escalate.
Contribute to successful project execution where needed (estimate 25%-35% of direct time on project execution at principal or strategic advisor level)
Oversee risk management related to projects and pursuits including review of contracts, fees, proposals on large pursuits and in coordination with Stantec's risk review process.
Practice:
Inspire, motivate, and hold the team accountable for the delivery of innovative design solutions. Drive project excellence
Lead or assigns responsibility for oversight of project delivery, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, discipline excellence and technical quality, documents quality and best practices in the execution of work.
Lead or assigns responsibility for management, needs assessment and provision of digital practice, tools, and applications in support of BC to deliver work.
Provide broad leadership influence:
Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner and a source of counsel and advice for their BC.
Be personally involved in key client relationships, strategic project pursuits and major project leadership within the BC.
Proactively identify opportunities to reinforce and further develop Stantec's high-performance culture with a focus on innovation, speed, and productivity.
Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company.
Uphold a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, encourages individual integrity, and focuses on the customer and service delivery.
Business and Financial Management:
Support BC Leadership by providing input into the annual budget for the BC, support development of power-sector related vision, focus, and priorities for implementation and setting specific goals for business performance in collaboration with our Sector Leadership.
Accountable for top line revenue growth, supports the BC Leadership team in meeting established targets net revenue, gross margin, SG&A, and operating income target in the BC.
Contribute to periodic net revenue forecasting.
Help drive collaboration and work sharing across the practice.
People Leadership:
Support BC Leadership with developing, attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent.
Contribute to mentorship and establishing succession plans for client and account managers.
Establish employee connectedness to leadership by interfacing frequently with staff at all levels.
Support the overall talent management lifecycle including career development, employee engagement, succession planning, coaching, and mentoring, diversity and inclusion, and leadership development.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of 15 years' related work, leadership, financial management, business development and consulting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Professional registration in related field. Account management, business development, relationships and sales strategy experience in the energy sector.
Must have a good driving record and valid Driver's License.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Indoor (Office Environment) Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting. Noise level varies but generally at levels of conversation. Majority of time spent using computer/laptop at workstation and related office equipment. Time spent carrying, reaching, lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling up to 20 pounds: Occasional - 1-33% of shift. Subject to extended periods of sitting; may be required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk short to moderate distances to perform work.

Pay Range:
Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ Areas-$157,100.00 - $243,400.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
