Summary The incumbent is a Journeyman Automotive Mechanic in the Fleet Management Group (FMG) of the Facility Management Service (FMS) and reports to the Fleet Management Supervisor. The work is conducted at two divisions of the Department of Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, Lexington, Kentucky. Incumbent is normally assigned to one division but is subject to work at the other division at any given time, dependent on work assigned. Responsibilities Duties include, but not limited to: Performs preventative maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Responsible for the PM of automotive vehicles, heavy equipment, portable engine-powered equipment, 2-cycle equipment, trailers, etc. Inspects all new vehicles, new engine-powered equipment, heavy equipment, trailers, etc. before being brought online for use. Has knowledge of tear down and rebuilding of automotive vehicle engines and systems, heavy equipment, portable engine-powered equipment, 2-cycle engines, pallet jacks, trailers; to include enclosed, open, and dump trailers, electronic controlled motors, and emergency power generators up to 1200KW. Has experience using testing equipment and on-board diagnostics (OBD2) electronic code readers, various battery and pneumatic tools such as impact wrenches, drills, grinders, sanders, etc., hydraulic vehicle lifts, specialized equipment such as calipers, measuring gauges, gear pullers, tachometers, vacuum gauges, compression testers, capacity testers, pressure bleeding devices. Researches and analyzes different online and in-print manuals pertaining to the equipment being worked on. Meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Familiarizes self with how their activities impact VA's goals to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent will be exposed to working conditions that will require them to be physically fit. This is to include, but not limited to, lifting, and carrying, heavy material, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, working in cramped areas for long periods of time, working while on their back, reaching, and often working in extreme heat or cold. Incumbent may be exposed to dust, grease, dirt, cold and hot conditions, extreme noise and vibrations, and poor lighting. Proper PPE will be provided for the incumbent's use and instructions will be given for proper use.
