Responsibilities If selected for this position, you will serve as a Case Manager providing a wide range of legal and administrative services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in complex criminal or civil matters. Also, as a Case Manager, you would be responsible for managing the flow and progress of criminal or civil cases through established processes. Typical work assignments will include: Provides technical assistance to AUSAs in a developmental capacity to facilitate the management of incoming and outgoing document discovery in accordance with e-Discovery and other procedural requirements. Substantively supports hearing or trial preparation, such as by identifying potential exhibits and witnesses and compiling jury instructions. Based on knowledge of the government's case, provides substantive support to elicit complete and useful discovery responses from litigation parties, non-parties, and agency partners. Provides technical and procedural guidance to case team members, assist case teams with preparation for hearings and trials, conduct legal research and writing, ensures discovery and case development activities are complete, accurate, and timely at each stage of investigation or litigation. Uses the advanced functions of document review software tools to organize and review discovery materials, including by devising and conducting searches, creating and applying logical tags, applying annotations, sorting and filtering files, and manually coding database fields in ways that facilitate case development. Supports AUSAs during court proceedings or other live case presentations, including by using trial presentation software and courtroom equipment to display exhibits or demonstratives, maintaining accounting system of exhibits entered into evidence, and managing witnesses. Conducts complex factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases in support of investigations and cases. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below: Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level. Specialized experience is defined as performing the following: (1) working in a legal environment preparing and managing discovery (2) performing case development activities; (3) assisting attorneys with trial preparation and presentation, including witness coordination, presentation software and exhibits or demonstratives (4) assisting case teams with preparation for hearings, and trials and conducting legal research and writing; (5) using automated litigation support technology such as Trial Director, OnCue, Everlaw, Relativity, or related programs to organize voluminous case information for retrieval, prepare computerized trail presentations, and index digital evidence; and (6) ensures discovery and case development activities are complete, accurate, and timely at each stage of investigation or litigation. Education: One of the following @types of education in a related field (e.g. Criminal Justice, Computer Science, Law, IT): Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field; OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.M., if related. Education must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Combining Education and Experience: A combination of specialized experience as described in A and education as described in B which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Education All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
