Are you interested in applying your Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology degree in the field of Transportation Construction as you pursue your Engineer in Training or Professional Engineering license?
Basis is looking for an early career level Construction Engineer to join our growing Construction Inspection and Management practice team based out of Centennial, CO. As a Construction Engineer, you will build the foundation of your career through practical field experience, coaching, mentoring, and training. The position is a blend of technical, administrative, and heavy field experience.
The focus will be on understanding and applying construction management processes, documentation, administration, and learning relevant terminology while performing construction inspection and management duties on projects in the transportation sector including roadways, bridges, and drainageways. As the position works beyond initial training, the Construction Engineer will take responsibility for inspecting construction activity to ensure compliance with permits, codes, standards, and contract documents while also developing the necessary collaboration, coordination, and communication skills with project stakeholders.
Your evolution as a Construction Engineer:
On day one, you will be doing work that matters alongside other talented team members. You will be building and transforming your skills by managing and supporting critical functions of a Construction Inspector role.
A foundational aspect to the project will require you to read and understand contract documents, design plans, site layouts, specifications, shop drawings, and construction methods to ensure compliance to the legal requirements, project requirements, and safety regulations as you observe the construction process from start to finish on a day-to-day basis. Understanding and interpreting contract documents will be your foundation for converting contract and other documents to practical problem solving in real time in the field.
Documenting construction activities and other important information daily throughout the project will help you learn, in a very practical manner, the construction flow of a project while also helping you develop observation and writing skills.
You will gain knowledge and skills in applying the appropriate technology and tools used in transportation construction projects such as:
Becoming proficient with Microsoft Office suite, cloud-based file servers, and GIS asset management software
Consistently use digital tools such as Excel workbooks for explanation of pay quantities and variations from plan quantities
Using standard inspection tools including measuring tape, smart level, measuring wheel, soils probe, and mobile devices
You will develop hands on skills in evaluating construction materials (such as concrete, aggregates, pavements, and soils) and measuring dimensions and elevations against design plans and schematics, etc. by:
measuring and documenting construction quantities for payment per contract terms using basic mathematics and geometry
coordinating with third-party materials technicians for quality assurance testing.
Safety is an important aspect of this role as well. You will help ensure a safe work environment by learning, applying, and modeling safety best practices while continuously identifying, anticipating, and preventing safety, health, and hazard concerns by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions while on construction site.
