Medical Coder - Independent Dispute Review (IDR)
Location: 100% Remote
Pay Rate: $25.00/hour
Schedule: Monday-Friday | 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM CST
Duration: Long-term contract (multi-year opportunity)
About the Opportunity
We are partnering with a nationally recognized medical review organization that supports state and federal agencies, healthcare payers, and employers by providing independent, unbiased medical claim reviews.
Due to the No Surprises Act and a permanent increase in claim volume, this team is expanding and building out a brand-new Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) unit. This is a stable, long-term opportunity with consistent work and strong training support-ideal for a CPC or CPC-A professional looking to grow their career beyond traditional coding roles.
What You'll Do
In this role, you will not be coding charts. Instead, you'll use your coding knowledge to make payment determinations on disputed medical claims.
Key responsibilities include:
Reviewing medical claims and supporting documentation to determine appropriate payment outcomes
Evaluating CPT-based disputes where parties have not agreed on reimbursement
Validating claim data and documentation, then selecting the appropriate party based on guidelines
Reviewing high volumes of emergency-related services, including:
Emergency room services
Ground ambulance
Air ambulance (knowledge helpful, not required)
Applying federal IDR and No Surprises Act guidelines (training provided)
Working within an internal claims and case management system
Maintaining accuracy, consistency, and impartial decision-making
? Important: This role requires a CPC or CPC-A, but does not involve active coding. Experienced coders who prefer repetitive coding may find this role less engaging.
Who We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
Active CPC or CPC-A certification (must be current)
Experience reviewing EOBs and working appeals
Strong understanding of medical billing, reimbursement, and insurance parameters
Ability to review documentation and make clear, defensible determinations
Adaptability and comfort working on a new and evolving team
Preferred / Nice to Have
Background in emergency services, ambulance, or facility billing
Knowledge of the No Surprises Act or IDR processes
Experience on either the professional or facility billing side
Medical billers with a CPC-A looking to transition into a non-traditional coding role
Best Fit:
Entry-level or early-career CPC/CPC-A professionals who enjoy analytical work, appeals, and EOB review and are looking for long-term, remote stability.
Training & Support
Structured onboarding with system and workflow training
IDR-specific training provided by experienced team leads
Most employees are fully ramped up by the end of week four
Work Environment & Equipment
100% remote position
Company-provided equipment, including:
Laptop
Monitor
Keyboard & mouse
Phone
Why This Role Stands Out
Long-term, stable workload driven by federal regulation
No productivity pressure tied to coding quotas
Unique exposure to IDR and federal dispute resolution work
Excellent option for CPC-A professionals building real-world experience
Predictable weekday schedule with no nights or weekends
