Summary The Chief, Dental Service is responsible for developing local policies and procedures related to matters internal to the Dental Service. This is an OPEN CONTIUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be on February 9, 2026. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular internals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. Responsibilities VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. Duties include, but not limited to: a) standards for documentation and coding of dental procedures, b) policies pertaining to Reusable Medical Equipment, c) practice within the scope of care and dental eligibility guidelines; d) provides clinical guidance including patient treatment, four-handed dentistry, infection control, OSHA guidelines, x-rays and oral health education; e) directs entry of diagnostic findings, dental care plans and completed procedures into the Computerized Patient Record System adjunct application, Dental Record manager Plus for all patients, etc. Compliance with VHA and facility credentialing and privileging processes, including coordination with the Professional Standards Board. Ensures appropriate response to congressional inquiries, compliance with standards of the VA Inspector General, TJC, and other survey bodies, as well as VHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and TJC safety and environment of care standards. Serves as the local liaison to dental professional organizations, other government agencies, and non-VA service providers, as well as other departments within the facility. Participates in the development and review of relevant service agreements and inter-facility agreements. Responsible for fiscal and budgetary planning and standards regarding contracting and procurement of equipment, supplies, and Non-VA Dental Care. Manages performance measures, monitors, and indicators as applicable to dentistry. Enforces personnel policies, ethical, and performance standards. Keep medical facility leadership apprised of and make recommendations for the needs and problems of the Service. Works with VISN Lead Dentist to assure that national and VISN policy are implemented at the facility level. Ensures dental providers are providing care on the basis of the patient's dental classification and develop a clearly defined and documented treatment plan for each episode of care consistent with the appropriate scope of care. Previous experience with renovation and new construction of dental clinics would be helpful, but not a requirement. Dentist Basic Requirements Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph3g, this part.) Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Service Chief/Service Line Manager/Lead Dentist. In addition to the above, Dentists in these roles must demonstrate effectiveness coordinating and managing interdisciplinary collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to optimize the care of patients under their purview. It is expected individuals in these roles serve on a full-time basis. Preferred Experience: Leadership experience in a Dental Setting.
