Summary The Laborer (Grounds) position is located within the Engineering Service assigned to the Grounds Shop at the Salisbury VA Medical Center, in Salisbury, North Carolina. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Performs various general laborer duties including loading and unloading trucks, loading dock areas, digging ditches, picking up trash, etc. Works with Gardner performing various duties that require operating specialized equipment to maintain grounds. Basic knowledge of routine maintenance procedures for all power equipment operated. Reviews safety precautions for proper operation of equipment according to manufacturer guidelines. Completes work after initial oral or written instructions are provided. Accomplishes recurring tasks from provided instructions for routine duties. Operates a Toro workman for general transportation of self and other laborers to and from various duty sites. Operates powered equipment including turf sweeper for leaf removal and ride-on powered vacuum. Uses backpack and push @type blower to clean streets, sidewalks, and roof areas. Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for specific jobs and equipment. Inspects and maintains hand and power tools on a daily basis to identify and correct potential safety hazards. Move/haul materials and equipment to work sites and back to storage or shop areas. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Laborer (Grounds)/PD50018A Physical Requirements: This position exerts heavy physical laboring in performing tasks such as lifting and moving heavy objects, running power equipment, pushing wheelbarrows and spreaders, shoveling objects weighing up to 50 pounds lifted on a regular basis, and up to 75 pounds may be lifted occasionally. also performs weed-eating and other laborer duties that require climbing of ladders and considerable walking. Working Conditions: The incumbent work is performed outside in extreme heat, cold and rainy weather. Work is also performed n dirty, dusty, and wet locations. Laborers must observe all safety regulations to protect themselves and others. Personal protective equipment is used as safety measures for specific jobs and equipment.
