Qualifications: Minimum QualificationsEducation:Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D. degree.Experience:Three (3) years of experience in litigation, state taxation or administrative law.Licenses and CertificationsMust possess a license to practice law in Texas and be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.The Hearings and Tax Litigation Division is seeking a skilled attorney to provide legal support to the agencyand#8217;s Tax Administration divisions, and to work as the agencyand#8217;s liaison with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) defending tax suits. The ideal candidate excels in understanding and clearly communicating complex legal issues to agency staff, can work effectively and collaboratively with Division attorneys and staff to provide quality legal analysis and work product, and is committed to gaining a broad and deep understanding of the legal principles underlying state taxation.In this role you will:and#183; Assists the OAG staff in obtaining evidence and witnesses. Receives and evaluates correspondence from the OAG on trial tactics, settlement offers, and related case management issues, and routes communications to the appropriate agency personnel. Works with affected CPA tax administration divisions (including Audit, Tax Policy, Revenue Accounting, Account Maintenance, and Enforcement) to ensure that OAG pleadings are consistent with agency policy and practice. Monitors and reports progress of pending cases to the divisionand#8217;s General Counsel and senior agency management.and#183; Communicates and coordinates with other agency divisions regarding tax administration. Provides legal support to Audit Division on disputed tax matters. Provides legal analysis of audit assignments to enhance efficient procedures and to promote voluntary compliance. May conduct hearings bypass conferences. Coordinates with agency divisions concerning disputed enforcement and collection actions. Provides legal analysis and support to the divisionand#8217;s General Counsel and senior agency management.and#183; Conducts presentations to agency staff and the public concerning taxability issues and procedures. Responds to inquiries from the public. Provides legal support to tax administration divisions in rulemaking and legislative analysis. Researches and drafts legal memoranda, letters, and other documents related to tax litigation and tax compliance.
