What You Will Do
At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the Engineering Services Division (ES-DO) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions in support of the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. ES-DO is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Deputy Group Leader (DGL) to support Engineering Services - Operations (ES-OPS).
The ES-OPS organization delivers critical capabilities in strategic execution. These interconnected functions ensure ES-DO operates with accountability, compliance, efficiency, and alignment to institutional priorities.
As the DGL you will report to the ES-OPS Group Leader and provide day-to-day leadership, operational oversight, and project integration across these functions. You will play an essential role in shaping the group's vision, strengthening workforce resilience, and fostering a high-performing team culture.
Engineering Manager 3 ($125,200 -$211,300)
The Deputy Group Lead (DGL) - Operations is a management position within the Engineering Services Division responsible for the safe, compliant, and cost-effective execution of operational engineering services in support of Laboratory mission needs. The DGL partners with the Group Leader to lead technical staff, manage resources, and ensure high-quality service delivery in a regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide operational leadership for engineering and technical staff supporting pressure safety, welding, and non-destructive examination (NDE) activities
Ensure work is planned and executed in accordance with Integrated Safety Management (ISM) and a mature conduct of engineering and operations environment
Develop and execute short- and long-range operational plans; monitor performance, schedules, and deliverables
Manage and execute budgets, including cost control, forecasting, and alignment of resources to mission priorities
Serve as a primary customer interface; assess performance, identify future work, and support business growth
Safety, Compliance, and Technical Oversight
Provide oversight of pressure systems in compliance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and ASME B31 piping codes
Ensure welding and NDE activities comply with applicable codes, standards, qualification requirements, and Laboratory procedures
Identify and mitigate operational risks; ensure quality and compliance for nuclear and non-nuclear work
Leadership and Workforce Management
Lead and develop staff through hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and annual evaluations
Forecast staffing needs and ensure appropriate technical coverage to meet operational demands
Knowledge and Experience
Lead technical or operational teams in a regulated engineering, industrial, or laboratory environment
Support the Laboratory with knowledge and working experience in pressure safety, welding, NDE, or closely related disciplines
Integrate safety, quality, cost, and schedule in operational decision-making
Provide strong business and financial acumen, including budget development and execution
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Leadership and Workforce Management
Lead and manage engineering and technical resources supporting the ES-OPS group
Communicate with all levels of internal and external customers to define and recommend cross-organizational operational objectives, develop specific short-term and long-range plans, and monitor progress to ensure long-term objectives are attained and customer requirements are met
Provide counsel and assistance to management on matters dealing with Department of Energy (DOE) contract compliance and/or Laboratory policies or procedures to ensure compliance
Provide guidance and interpretation of LANL policies and programs
Ensure regular, open communication with workers that promotes an environment where workers feel comfortable bringing errors, system weaknesses, and issues to the attention of management
Develop staffing plans in accordance with customer requirements and within budget constraints, perform recruiting and hiring activities to implement those plans, and develop staff through training, mentoring, and qualification programs
Provide leadership in the resolution of technical and personnel issues
Recruit, hire, develop, train, and mentor staff
Experience in developing and managing budgets
Collaboration and Coalition Building
Demonstrated experience in building effective teams and recruiting the right people for the job
Experience analyzing program objectives to determine what resources are necessary for accomplishing tasks to meet goals
Demonstrated success accomplishing large project goals highlighting active collaboration
Communication
Demonstrated ability to gain cooperation of others and conduct presentations of technical and/or function-specific information concerning specific projects or schedules
Experience providing guidance on the implementation of operational management policies, federal regulations, procedures, and/or practices
Experience authoring strategic program documents and implementation plans
Demonstrated ability to develop and nurture effective customer relationships across a large organization with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts
Education/Experience at Engineering Manager 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
