WSP is currently initiating a search for a Distribution Grid Modernization Engineer for our Denver, CO office. You will be involved in projects with our SCADA and Analytical Services Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
This Opportunity
Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of @contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects). Provides situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities. Provides leadership with ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Your Impact
The qualified candidate will be responsible for the modernization of the utility distribution systems, this includes planning, justification, and on-going support of the following Distribution Grid Modernization Programs:
FLISR (Fault, Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration)
Volt-Var Optimization or other similar programs (IVVC, CVR)
Distribution Resiliency
ADMS (Advance Distribution Management Systems)
Electrification of Transportation
DER Solutions (DERMS, NWA/NWS, Dynamic Response, Hosting Capacity)
Advance Planning Techniques (8760, Quasi Static Time Series Analysis)
The ability to interact with a wide variety of people to obtain the required information needed for performance of electrical distribution system studies
Leads and performs engineering tasks associated with a critical or analytical engineering project or a small number of complex projects that require specialized knowledge in many areas.
Exercises authority and technical leadership on assignments that are often self-initiated and self-directed. Assignments are strategic and have significant long-term implications to achievement of overall business objectives.
Track project schedules and budgets.
Participation in industry working groups or standards (IEEE, CIGRE, IEC, ANSI)
Participation as a presenter in industry conferences
Some travel should be expected
Ability to supports other distribution disciplines such as Protection and Planning
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
10+ years of relevant post education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution at a utility, industrial, or commercial scale.
Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Demonstrates competence and comprehensive knowledge concerning adjacent disciplines such as electrical engineering, P&C, SCADA.
Experience with electrical infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
Proficient with electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of electrical engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
Demonstrated experiencing in Electrical Power System Analysis using one of the following software packages - CYME, Milsoft, Synergi, or PSCAD
Must have a strong command of the English language and possess good written and oral communication skills
Ability to work in design teams, is self-motivated to perform assigned tasks, and take the initiative to learn new topics
Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
MSEE or PhD
Significant knowledge of the design and operation of overhead and underground distribution lines (4 kV through 35 kV)
Demonstrated advance modeling techniques internal to CYME, Synergi, or Milsoft or external programing/scripting
Demonstrated PSCAD or other EMT software analysis for feasibility studies, system impact studies, reactive compensation studies, critical clearing time, stability (transient & dynamic), interconnection model development, power factor correction, and other related studies
Demonstrated experience in ADMS Configuration, Testing, or support of one of the following software packages - Schneider EcoStruxure, OSI Spectra, GE ADMS, or SurvalentONE
Prior Experience supporting or within a Distribution System Operations Department
Demonstrated Experience working on Pilot Projects from creation to completion
Demonstrated Successful Change Management as part of Pilot Projects
Foundational Knowledge of Utilities IT/OT Architecture
Demonstrated industry participation in industry working groups, standards, conference presentations, or publications
Experience with developing utility planning/program standards
Experience with the integration of distributed generation within the planning process

Compensation:
Expected Salary (Colorado only): $129,600 - $220,300
