Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply Responsibilities The Endodontist Dental Officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures within the scope of endodontics specialty. Provides direction of dental staff, supports education of trainees and is responsible for dental clinic administration as indicated at their assigned location. This position will require treating veterans at two VA Sites. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF DUTIES. The General Dentistry dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services in Inpatient and outpatient settings. Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following: Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Administer local anesthesia. Formulate suitable treatment plans based on the diagnosed dental condition. Perform endodontic surgery to clean canals that contain calcium deposits, assist in making accurate diagnoses, and treat damaged root surfaces or surrounding bone. Perform apicoectomies to treat persistent inflammation or infection occurring in the bony area around the end of the tooth. Maintain teeth that have previously undergone root canal procedures. Perform temporary restorations of teeth. Place post and core on teeth, as indicated. Perform other associated dental procedures consistent with the scope performed by endodontists in the community. Enter accurate, complete, timely progress notes for each episode of care in the patient's electronic record. Proper use, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment used in the assessment and care of patients. Adhere to safety, health, and infection control standards, regulations and work practices, as well as ergonomic standards. He/she reports any unsafe conditions to supervisory and/or appropriate officials. Assist in orientation of new staff, and provide patient and family education, including informed consent which is documented. according to corresponding VA policies. Assist with educating trainees including dental residents, dental students, dental assistant and hygiene students. Maintain supplies, equipment and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency. Demonstrate knowledge and maintains standards in the use and reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). Participate in performance improvement activities, disaster preparedness, administrative duties, and other responsibilities assigned by the Chief, Dental Service. Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
