Summary The VA St. Louis Healthcare System (VASTLHCS) is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic for the Facilities Engineering Service. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general and preventive maintenance of the different engineering disciplines reflected in the trades Carpentry, Plumbing, Electric, and HVAC. Responsibilities Major duties include, but are not limited to: Electrical Performs basic troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests and adjusts electrical generators, commercial feeder systems, security light sets, light fixtures, fans, heating systems, appliances, thermostats, electrical equipment sed to chill/freeze/cool filter air. Carpentry/Locksmithing Maintains and services door closing devices and related hardware for buildings, furnishings, and equipment. Performs interior and exterior finish carpentry, partitions, windows, doors, frames, building hardware, wall and door covering products, acoustical work, exterior architectural trim. Plumbing/Pipefitting Performs a variety of plumbing maintenance and repair work including work that involves removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply and disposal systems. Installs/repairs pressure producing valves, hot water heaters, and/or storage tanks, circulating pumps, drinking fountains, laundry tubs, dishwasher etc. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment systems that provide for heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering and circulating for different kinds of structures related to the medical center complex. Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment to trace and locate defects and malfunctions with various equipment/areas, making periodic inspections and necessary adjustments to controls and equipment. General Maintenance Performs work involving a variety of general repairs, maintenance, adjustments, modifications, inspections, and preventative maintenance. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Works long, rotating shifts. Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather, works in mud, and in wet or icy areas. Exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Typically inspects parts, equipment, and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
