The Health Alliance Plan (HAP) 2026 Summer intern program will run May 11 - August 7. This paid internship will require full time hours availability (M-F) during the summer session dates. It will be a hybrid work format, involving a combination of remote and onsite work/events in Troy, MI (commute & housing expense reimbursement not provided).
This position will support the HAP legal operations/administrative team.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve. As an intern, you will get exposure to various aspects of our organization and work closely with industry professionals, enabling you to develop valuable skills in the healthcare and insurance sector.
In addition to helping your assigned department meet its goals, you will collaborate with the other interns towards a common goal of completing a project to present to leadership. It will also provide the opportunity to attend fun networking events, make new connections, and enhance your presentation skills.
PROGRAM DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct comprehensive research on industry trends, healthcare policies, and emerging technologies. Analyze data and prepare reports to support strategic decision-making processes.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of projects. Contribute innovative ideas and support the execution of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of healthcare-related data. Ensure data accuracy and integrity, utilizing appropriate software tools and methodologies.
Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and assisting with customer support activities. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
Identify opportunities for process optimization and propose innovative solutions to streamline workflows and enhance productivity. Assist in the implementation of approved process improvement initiatives.
Create and maintain accurate documentation, including policies, procedures, and project-related materials. Generate regular reports, dashboards, and presentations to effectively communicate project progress and outcomes.
Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments to support a positive and inclusive work environment. Contribute actively to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Department Duties/Responsibilities:
Assist and support processing of and responding to civil subpoenas.
Assist and support processing of and responding to written lien requests from outside law firms in support of subrogation recovery program.
Review and assess incoming contract review requests to determine whether documentation sent is complete and perform necessary follow up with clients to enable assignments to department counsel.
Participate in gathering and organizing documents compiled as part of due diligence process in the lead up to corporate transactions.
Conduct independent legal research on a project-specific basis regarding issues assigned by corporate counsel.
Program/Department EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited 4-year undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant field (healthcare, social science, pre-law, English or related field of study).
Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis tools.
Previous analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution experience preferred.
Previous experience in an environment requiring confidentiality preferred.
Michigan resident.
